SVE Plots Blazer-Based Typhoon Revival If A GMC Version Arrives

General Motors is on a crossover kick, pinning much of its business success on selling high-profit margin crossovers and pickup trucks to help subsidize its future electric and autonomous vehicle development. And (arguably) one of its more exciting recent entries is the Chevrolet Blazer. While the new Blazer lacks the off-road prowess or ruggedness of the original models, it does feature sporty driving characteristics and an appearance that matches. However, the new crossover has yet to spawn a GMC sibling; the GMC Acadia is as close as it gets for the time being. But if one arrives, there’s one company eager to revive the legendary GMC Typhoon. That company is Specialty Vehicle Engineering, or SVE.

If the SVE name sounds familiar, that’s because the firm recently made waves by announcing plans to revive the GMC Syclone – a GMC Canyon-based pickup truck. For that, SVE increased the Canyon’s 3.6L LGY V6 engine output to 455 horsepower thanks to a supercharger. SVE is also offering an available Sport Suspension Package that lowers the truck’s ride height while adding thicker traction bars, new bushings, stiffer front and rear shocks, and a rear sway bar. The package looks sinister.

Now imagine that performance packed into a GMC version of the new Chevrolet Blazer. It would be called the Typhoon, as intended, and would have the performance chops to support its iconic name. It is interesting, though, that SVE is waiting for a GMC version of the Blazer. Such a model isn’t in the works, as far as we know, which means there may be a lot of disappointed GMC Typhoon fans out there still waiting for its return. As such, SVE could simply tune the GMC Acadia, as it shares its C1 platform (and many other mechanical bits) with the Blazer.

Either way, the thought of a new GMC Typhoon with, say, 455 horsepower, makes the ongoing crossover invasion a little easier to digest.

  • Thank you so much for this. I was into this issue and https://vidmate.onl/ tired to tinker around to check if its possible but couldnt get it done. Now that i have seen the way you did it, thanks guys

    regards

      • IDK WTF is wrong with GM. They have that glorious 3.6 from the ATS-V that they could drop in the Canyon for an actual Syclone. Obviously it would be an expensive low volume model, like the Trackhawk, but it would absolutely bring excitement to the brand and people to the showroom.

        • You already have people complaining about the price of the Blazer.
You add the TT engine to it along with the needed hardware and adds more cost to make the price to where you sell em… 4K more a year.

With the low volume you don’t make back the cost of even the EPA test or the crash test if you have to modify the platform to make it work.

Sure FCA builds a Trailhawk but they are not selling many or making money on it.

No people are not lining the showroom just to see them.

Due to the high development cost GM is working with others like this company and AEV on the Bison to share the cost.

It is not like the good old days where you just dump a 389 into a Tempest and sell it as a GTO.

This is why less and less performance or special models are done and why so many are just paint and stripe packages.

  • At least make it a 2 door like the original. Don't be just another 4 door family utility vehicle that happens to be fast.

    • Trevor: "You're descriptive comment is WHY i made my Paragraph so ultimately detailed"!! WAY TO GO!!

  • GMA: I'm sorry but your description is just wrong! The GMC Typhoon was Ultimately the best design thus far! Because of it's AWD; v6; smaller outer shell: it countered the shape of a Jeep! But the name envelopes a SVE model w/o looking like it! (no matter the color)! The GMC Acadia's shell is too big; If you would have made the Acadia's bodylines similar to the Typhoon's; then you might have something! Also w/the SVE's touches under the hood, in the chassis! If the GMC Canyon was renamed: GMC Syclone SVE!? I suggest thicker sway bar end link's w/polyurethane bushings & severe duty nitrogen gas shocks & the supercharger be a (below the hood procharger): "If folks want a factory built performance truck(ready made) like you have shown in advertisement's; they have to be able to put up the CASH for it"!! The new Chevy Blazer has body line's that copy a subaru FWD! W/the reaction of the AMERICAN people; The blazer needed to be built in the USA & NOT in mexico! You Have Top Designer's drafting every automobile's shapes, lines: I think it's best not to copy another countries body-lines to make CHEVROLET'S OF COMING YEARS! >[That's possibly what's going to keep the AMERICAN people's interest & keep the REVENUE coming like Niagara falls]< !!

  • Chevrolet should just 'Do it' drop the 455 hp 6.2L OHV-2v V8 or the new 6.6L Durmax diesel into the Blazer to build a true sporty CUV.

  • I suggest thicker sway bar end link’s w/polyurethane bushings & severe duty nitrogen gas shocks & the supercharger be a (below the hood procharger): “If folks want a factory built performance truck(ready made) like you
