The 2019 GMC Sierra introduces two major innovations for the pickup truck’s cargo area – a carbon fiber box called CarbonPro and a flexible new tailgate dubbed MultiPro. In this installment of the GM Authority Feature Spotlight, we’re going to take a closer look at the GMC-exclusive and industry-first MultiPro tailgate.
According to GMC, the MultiPro represents “the segment’s most innovative tailgate ever”. Built from aluminum, it aims to be flexible, functional, to minimize effort and maximize achievement with the following four new positions that were never before possible in a pickup
Those concerned about reliability of a brand new feature will be delighted to know that the MultiPro has undergone more testing and validation than any tailgate in GM’s history.
The GMC MultiPro Tailgate has the following six positions on the 2019 Sierra 1500:
1. Primary Gate
Open the primary gate using the key fob’s power release, from inside the truck or from a button on the gate.
2. Primary Gate Load Stop
With the primary gate open, the load stop helps prevent items from sliding out of the box.
3. Foldable Inner Gate For Easy Access
Inner gate folds down for easy access when loading and unloading the box.
4. Full-Width Step
The inner gate folds into a large step for easy entry and exit from the box. It has a maximum weight capacity of 375 pounds (170 kg).
Ease of use is enhanced with two buttons on the tailgate handle that allow convenient inner gate release.
5. Inner Gate Load Stop
Inner gate also includes a load stop to help prevent second-tier items from sliding out of the box.
6. Inner Gate Work Surface
Opened inner gate provides work surface as well as second-tier loading.
The MultiPro tailgate (GM RPO code QK2) and is by no means a standard feature. Instead, it’s standard on the following 2019 Sierra models:
Those who prefer the traditional tailgate instead of the MultiPro can opt for the regular tailgate option (RPO code QK1).
Meanwhile, the MultiPro tailgate is not available on the following 2019 Sierra 1500 models:
Amid a legal battle with a GM supplier.
Generally following the market trend.
Plus, special leases on all-new premium three-row crossover.
Refreshed SUV in crisp, clean colors.
Top-dog Caddy hits the racetrack.

Love this tailgate. GM should make an aftermarket for older model. Can't wait for the new HD.
This needs to be standard across the whole line. If not, it should be available as an option. I think this could help move a few more trucks if it was standard or an option.
Re: "... Those concerned about reliability of a brand new feature will be delighted to know that the MultiPro has undergone more testing and validation than any tailgate in GM’s history..."
Sorry, but I'd be very wary about buying a "first year" truck with this feature. Something like this can never get enough "real world" testing before introduction and production. Way to complicated and over-engineered: kinda like the front end of the Sierra. I can't picture dealing with that tailgate during the winter in Maine or the upper Mid-West. The linkage(s) required to synch everything and keep all the features and options working together as a team has to be extensive. If water gets in there and freezes, things break and it's done... until Spring. No thank you.
"The linkage(s) required to synch everything and keep all the features and options working together" Have you seen the tailgate (cut away) in person?
Can you get your doors to open and close on those days? I guess you could Bo Duke it. There are some pretty good lubes out there these days!
Do you think DOHC motors and 8-10 spd. transmissions are over-engineered?
Just asking!
Gerad - seems like you're greatly underestimating the power of good engineering.
It looks great, but I'd like to see how they hold up in 10 or 15 years of use.
Wondering how easy it is to remove this tailgate from the truck. I'm thinking when these trucks hit the dealer lots there might be quite a few that come up missing...
I would assume the tailgates has power locks like the current models have. Especially since this tailgate will be $$.
