GM Confirms New China Tariffs Will Affect Buick Envision Imports

President Donald Trump plans to enact a 25 percent tariff on imported products from China, and General Motors confirmed it will likely feel the effects associated with the 2019 Buick Envision.

The Envision is one of two vehicles GM imports from China to the United States and starts at $31,995. The duties could raise the crossover’s price by $8,000, a Buick spokesperson confirmed with Bloomberg in a Friday report. In total, $50 billion worth of Chinese imports will face the 25 percent tariff.

The other vehicle GM imports from China, the Cadillac CT6 Plug-In, will also be subject to the tariff, though Cadillac did not comment on the vehicle. All other CT6 sedans are built at the Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant.

Buick’s decision to import the Envision from China has caused a flurry of reactions in the past couple of years since the car’s introduction. Still, that didn’t stop the brand from selling 41,010 Envisions in 2018—its first full year on sale in the United States.

  • They will be fine. First the tariff many not last all that long. If it does GM will move production to here or Canada,.

    Lordstown could use the work.

China has been taking out lunch and eating it. They are a large but not a strong economy and they will blink first.

      • See the comments below.

Anything is better than China. But with current negative views of both Canada and Mexico with regards to trade, potential NAFTA cancellation would make it very risky to move to either of these countries. And Canada's auto industry is dying fast.

        Interesting times for sure!

      • Lordstown needs a crossover if they want to stay open long term.

Why did Chevrolet put such little effort into the current Cruze design? The precious gen was much cooler looking. It needed more interior room, but it looked very good.

The new one is bland, especially compared to the hot selling Civic.

        • The Cars are dead or declining period.

Lordstown deserves a relevent CUV or truck line. They have cooperated with GM and should be rewarded and I expect they will.

  • Good...Good...GREAT!

Americans finally care about their economy and neighbor's jobs...Our economy is on fire again and car companies are moving operations back to the U.S. and new investments in the U.S. from Toyota and other foreign companies are reinvigorating the American auto industry. Keep up the pressure!

The Buick Envision never sold well anyway. An imperfect car and Americans would rather buy from companies that make their vehicles in the U.S. built by American workers, while supporting American jobs, taxes, and communities. Just look at all the BMWs, Mercedes, and Toyota/ Honda SUVs built in America. They get it, so now GM need to get it!

    • Lol, you know the down votes are from the butthurt neo-nationalist protectionist Canadians, left-wing anti-Trumpers, and Sean. Lol

Just watch how many down votes this post gets. Lol

    • Simple, GM, make your vehicles in the U.S. and support Americans, their economies and children's future. Just imagine how much less pollution would be created if you didn't have to send the Envision half way around the world. Buicks can still be made in China for Chinese and by Chinese. They have a lot of people so can support their own sales and communities, right?

    • Wanting something to be true doesn't make it true. The Envision sells well(you are wrong. Most people don't care about where its built.
I would prefer it be made in the USA but that is unrealistic.

      • Hi, Sean!

Show me statistical proof (called facts) that "most people dont care where it is built"? Been to Canada lately or watched its tv channels? Constant commercials telling the viewers to "Buy Canadian", "Proudly made in Canada", and "Support Canadian jobs..." If Americans didnt care were things were made and supporting their communities, the President Trump would never have been elected...Polls show overwhelming support for Trump on protecting the American economy.

        • Here is the gods honest truth. Yes people do care where things are made but it is not top of the list.

Price is what matters. People hate Walmart. They decry Walmart but most continue to shop there because of price. Amazon the same thing they ware making a dent in Walmart because of price.

The Buick shows that while it is made in China the price has kept it competitive in the market here. So far 41,000 units even with GM selling two other cheaper models shows that there is money there.

Now raise the price and that may go away. The segment is just too competitive to get the price too high. Then the XT 4 takes over.

So while people care the wallet often plays a role with the public and that is how China and the swamp gets away with this till someone finally called them on it.

So I agree people care but when push comes to shove prices play the final role in what sells and what does not.

That is how Hyundai has made a major impact in the market. Price.

          • People don't hate Walmart, they hate shopping inside a Walmart...

Question to anyone, where was your cell phone manufactured?

        • The proof is buick sold 41,000 units. The envision is not a cheap vehicle. They are pricey. That is the proof

          • Proof is..........

A lot of people do illegal things even though, well, they are illegal..

A lot of people eat too much sugar even though everyone knows eating too much sugar is not good for your health.

A lot of people just do stupid things and dumb things, period.

You didn't prove anything but stupidity and bad choices are made all the time.

Let's see how many they sell when the price is raised by tariffs. Karma is a b***h, isn't it? Enjoy the show!

        • If Americans cared where their clothes were made and only wanted to buy American -- America would be a sea to shining seas nudist colony.

          • Proof is..........

          • Once again, if Americans cared about your opinion and agreed with you, Hillary Clinton would be President instead of hocking books at Costco.

We all know how that turned out, don't we?

P.S. Clothes are commodities, not cars. The election of Donald Trump proved people do care.

        • Trump lost the popular vote by 3 million. He only won the fly over country electoral college by less than 100,000 so lets not pretend he has a strong mandate. Romney got more votes than Trump for years prior.

          • Trump flipped states that hadn’t voted republican in 30 years. No one expected Michigan, Wisconsin, or Pennsylvania to become red states in 2016.

Like it or not, that’s a huge deal and a major turning point for the Republican Party.

          • "No one expected Michigan, Wisconsin, or Pennsylvania to become red states in 2016."

            The Russians did.

      • Hey, Joseph...

If nobody cares where things are made (and the resulting economic effects on their communities), then China and Canada can just send all of its production to the U.S....because, hey, NO ONE CARES...right?

The auto industry is NOT at all the same as producing some low-tech, commodity product like dollar store crap. The auto industry supports generations of high-tech research; engineers, researchers and other education-oriented jobs; economic spinoff effects of factories being in a town by way of restaurants, service jobs, etc.; and an increased tax base for the community to support education, health care, etc. Plus you don't have the pollution you get from shipping cars to the other side of the world and countries like China who don't abide by any pollution laws.

      • My dealer still has 2017 Envisions on the lot.

You’d think that something built in China would be a good value. It’s actually a very bland, very average vehicle for the price.

They should be competing with the XC60 but they seem to have built a fancy Escape.

  • China will definitely blink first just like they already gave tax/ trade concessions to the U.S. after President Trump initiated the first round of tariffs. China's economy is almost completely reliant on the U.S. for exports; block exports for a few days and you could crash the entire Chinese economy. American exports to China are few and why Trump is trying to balance the trade. The Chinese have much more to lose and their economy is very weak right now with huge debt and declining demand for their products.

    • Exactly!

Remember when those idiots were trying to scare us there would be "nuclear war" because President Trump was being tough on North Korea? Instead Trump is the first President to meet with NK and bring peace to the world.

We finally have an Alpha-male President. Love it!

        • Hey Geoff, facts are difficult for sore losers aren't they?

Speaking of delusional, what is Hillary doing these days?

          • @ Jonas I love the work Hilary has done. I am glad you asked what is Hillary doing these days? She has recently finished working On a sci-fi thriller. Called I am mother. It’s in postproduction now. Hilary Swank. I hope you didn’t think it was The other Hillary. You know the one that Can’t Understand Normal Thinking.

          • @DriverX The other Hillary, with the last name Clinton, was last seen trying to sell her book at Costco and Walmart while the gentleman who beat her is saving the world with de-nucleariization deals and a better economy.

Everyday I wake up with a smile on my face. How about you?

          • I agree. That’s why I gave you a thumbs up on all your comments. Although I do hope Hillary writes another book while she is rotting away in prison.

          • "Speaking of delusional, what is Hillary doing these days?"

She's not separating families at the boarder

She's not appointing unskilled family members and morons to important gov jobs

She's not paying off gigolos and male pornstars

            She's not working for Putin

    • The vast US debt is also stabilised by the trillions of dollars in bonds and securities held by Chinese banks...

The tariff is on the price that GM brings it in to USA. Its nothing like $8000. Even with 100% tariffs it would be cheaper to make in China. You don't get foreign compact pick ups because there just isn't a market for them.

  • Buick appeared nimble in responding to the SUV/CUV rush -

Buick had the Enclave, picked up the Opel Mokka (Encore) from South Korea, and the midsize Envision from China ... the results have been really good, but 2 of the 3 in the lineup were available imports.

Whether GM North Am is tooled and ready to pick up all the Envision and Encore production - remains to be seen.

Also wonder what the effect will be on the entire SAIC partnership. Buick & Cadillac are both big sellers in China, as we know.

    Time will tell.

  • china hasn't been screwing you. american corporations have been screwing you. they are the ones that wrote these trade agreements.

  • Haha that's what GM gets, all these underutilized plants in NAFTA, won't be as bad as with Ford and their new $30k Chinese carry-out Focus "Active"..

  • If I recall, the near universal response for the initial Buick Envision intro was “China?!? No thanks.”

This will impact the Volvo XC60 as well, except those buyers at least have an expectation that their cars are foreign builds.

A good leader would have seen the political winds shifting years ago. That Envision should have been built with one of its platform siblings in Mexico or Canada. Now more attention is drawn to the fact that Buick’s most boring model is imported from China.

    • nothing. i bet that is what a lot of people from every country says about products "made in usa"
