General Motors CEO Mary Barra Joins The #ILookLikeAnEngineer Movement

If you’re unaware of the #ILookLikeAnEngineer hashtag movement that has begun sweeping the internet, we’ll briefly recap the situation.

According to The Drum, a modern marketing magazine, the movement was sparked after one female employee, Isis Wenger who works for OneLogin, was featured as a recruiter for the company’s hiring process. Sexist comments followed, with people questioning if she truly worked for the company, or if the company had hired a pretty face.

In response, Wenger posted to her personal Twitter account holding a sign reading, “I help build enterprise software. #ILookLikeAnEngineer”

Now, the hashtag has gained a massive amount of momentum, and General Motors CEO Mary Barra has thrown in her support.

Barra also tweeted to her 15,000 plus followers stating, “General Motors has a diverse array of talented engineers around the world and I’m honored to lead them. #ILookLikeAnEngineer”

Barra graduated from the General Motors Institute, now Kettering University, with a bachelor degree in Science, and has held various engineering positions inside GM since 1980. She was also named one of the world’s most powerful women by Fortune, and holds the title for first female CEO of a major automaker.

  • Don't want to look like I'm nitpicking here , but Ms Barra's first ? accomplishment was simplifying the dress code and now she wants to improve the Working Environment . This , to me , kind of says something about her control of what is really a man's business , building and selling vehicles . It would appear in my opinion , anyway , she is picking the battles she has a hope of winning . Perhaps her appointment had more to do with putting a woman's touch and a concerned truthful face to a company suffering with monster public relation fiasco , with lawsuits , big time . This is just my opinion so don't read a lot into this .
This brings up a big question , for me , as to who or what group of men or big cheese is responsible for making the real vehicle decision making in running of this bloated corporate manufacturer ?? The plans , the vehicle portfolio , the ultimate direction of the company and it's future . Ms. Barra , sorry but I think she is not in this select group of men , here !! Am I making a big mistake in calling her , window dressing ,then I apologize , MARY , but you are the person , where " THE BUCK STOPS HERE " ! The only person , other than the nameless overall company controllers that I can look for answers from ,,,,,,,, YOU !
