While the 2016 Cadillac CT6 will be an important product in Cadillac’s domestic market, it will be even more so in China. Cadillac has sat in the doldrums for some time in the booming market that continues to scoop up luxury vehicles left and right.
The 2016 CT6 is a good starting point for China before a true flagship Cadillac arrives to rival the likes of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Until then, we have spy shots of the Chinese-market Cadillac CT6 from CarNewsChina.
The car looks nearly identical to the U.S.-spec car, with the only major difference to spot being the Shanghai-GM badge above the lower bumper. Shanghai-GM will manufacture the car in China, while production for the domestic market will stick to the U.S.
The 2016 CT6 will launch with a plug-in option for China first before heading stateside, while the same three engine choices remain: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 and the all-new twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6.
China’s interesting badging continues, though. Instead of regular turbo badging, we see “40T” badged instead. Presumably referring to the 3.0-liter V6’s output of 400 hp.
Production for the 2016 Cadillac CT6 is expected to commence late this year.

So, can anyone answer this question?
If a CT8 is coming to represent Cadillac's top flagship spot (and it competes with a BMW 7 series and MB S Class) wouldn't the CT6 then be the successor to the CTS, which is the "middle" car in the Cadillac line-up?

The CT6 is not a successor to the CTS. The car is too big and CTS is currently around. The next midsize sedan for the CTS could be dubbed as CT5.
The CT6 is currently Cadillac's standard flagship against the standard flagships from the competitors. However, it won't compete with the S Class and '16 7 Series because both are and will be long-wheel based elite flagships from now on.
I am confident the CT6 will have a market for those looking for something different.
No one for sure is going to know the answer to your question . We will have the Cadillac Touring 6 , then the Cadillac Touring 8 , is there a 7 in the mix ? The CT8 designates an 8 cyl. . Atleast from news reports I have read , plus to really compete in the class it needs an 8 cyl . . And just like science where there is new discoveries daily . the same can be said about Cadillacs " Arts and Science " , the CT8 wont look like anything we see now from the division . I think there is hope for Cadillac . If they can build a truck ( aka, Escalade ) that is their halo vehicle right now then surely the engineers can build a luxury car unlike anything that has been done before . They NEED to to go against the German marques . Cadillac did it back in the early 20th century when the cars were made for the wealthy , not rich people , the wealthy . There is a difference . And for heavens sake .... start spending some of the 12 B's on ADVERTISING !
hopefully Caddy will replace the old wedged CTS styling with new styling.....styling that the Caddy concepts have.

So they shipped a CT6 or two from China to be photographed in the U.S., because why? Or are they American-made and rebadged for China?
And is a rear 3/4 shot really the way you want to introduce it? Judging by the bare tree, this photo must be from March. Just askin.

Well, I can see how a reader might get confused:
the headline says "Chinese-Spec 2016 Cadillac CT6 Spied".
The accompanying photo is a shot from NYC.
The article doesn't direct the reader, in a specific way, to the site.
Which I understand, I guess - those Car News China photos are butt-ugly.
A dusty CT6 rear shot, the interior shot is nasty, the fourth shot is oddly cropped.
Not exactly showing the CT6 at it's best - I'd show the Soho photo, too.
