2016 Chevrolet Camaro Teased Once More, Touts Its Newfound Structural Stiffness

We’re a little over a month away from when Chevrolet will reveal the highly anticipated 2016 Camaro, but we continue to be spoon fed small teasers to whet our palettes until we are able to see the car in person, and today Chevrolet has fed us our latest portion.

Chevrolet says the car has undergone 9 million hours of computational time honing the driving experience of the 2016 Camaro. Those hours have translated into a 28 percent stiffer structure, and more precise calibration of the steering feel. Meaning, the 2016 Camaro should feel much less bulky, thanks to the Alpha platform.

“The modeling abilities of computer aided engineering are advancing at incredible rates,” said Jim Karlavage, Camaro program engineering manager. “Today, we can accurately model opportunities to add torsional strength without adding unnecessary mass. The result is a lighter, stiffer structure that benefits every aspect of the driving experience.”

Keeping the mass of the 2016 Camaro in check also allowed the car’s components to be scaled down accordingly, including the wheels, tires and brakes. The Camaro team looked at every aspect of the new pony car to reduce un-sprung weight wherever deemed necessary.

We’re anxious as ever to see what Chevrolet has in store for us, but we won’t have to wait much longer. The May 16th debut of the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro should be here before we know it.
