Chevrolet has inked a multi-year deal with Bristol Motor Speedway to serve as the official pace car of the legendary half-mile track, beginning with this weekend’s Drive to Stop Diabetes 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race.
For this weekend at Bristol, Chevy has sent over a Red Hot Camaro SS 1LE and a Heron White SS sedan, with the Camaro pacing the Drive to Stop Diabetes 300 Xfinity series race, and the SS leading the Food City 500 in Support of Steve Byrnes and Stand Up To Cancer. A Chevrolet hasn’t paced the always-popular race at Bristol since 2008, when an Impala SS led the field of 40 cars for the Sharpie 500 night race.
“We are very happy to be back as the official vehicle of Bristol Motor Speedway,” Jeff Chew, manager, strategic planning and operations for Chevrolet Racing said in a statement. “This effort was all made possible through collaboration with our Southeast Region. Bristol is a special place on the NASCAR circuit with some of the most passionate fans and loyal Chevrolet enthusiasts. We are proud to support them and partner with the Southeast Region on this multiyear endeavor.”
The SS pace car for the Food City 500 will be adorned with Steve Byrnes’ name above the driver and passenger doors. Byrnes, a co-host of NASCAR Race Hub and the play-by-play announcer for the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, is currently on a medical leave of absence as he undergoes treatment for cancer.
Keep an eye out for Chevy and its cars on the track and if you’re lucky enough to attend the race itself, on display in the midway area. The green flag will fly for the Food City 500 on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
