Corvette Racing Looking To Add To Sebring Legacy This Weekend

Corvette Racing is heading to south Florida this weekend for North America’s oldest sports car race, the 12 Hours of Sebring. The pressure will be on for the team’s six driver lineup as they look to add to Corvette Racing’s eight class victories at the track since 2002.

Having won the season opener at Daytona, Corvette Racing already has a win under their belt in Florida this year. They are returning with the same driver lineups as in Daytona, consisting of Antonio Garcia, Jan Magnussen and Ryan Briscoe in the No. 3 C7.R and Oliver Gavin, Tommy Milner and Simon Pagenaud in the No. 4 Corvette C7.R.

Corvette Racing’s first Sebring win came in 2002 when Oliver Gavin partnered up with NASCAR road course legend Ron Fellows and current Cadillac Racing driver Johnny O’Connell to win the American Le Mans Series’ GT1 class. That wasn’t the first time a Corvette ran at Sebring, however, with five Corvettes contesting the Sebring 12 Hours in 1955. Corvettes also made sporadic appearances at the Sebring 12 Hours between 1955 and 1999, winning 16 more times.

Chevrolet says the first Corvette Racing win at Sebring “ushered in a new era of racing Corvettes at the track.” When the yellow C7.Rs take to the bumpy sweepers of Sebring this weekend, it will be the 17th consecutive season in which the team has fielded two cars for the 12 Hours of Sebring. Over that period, they’ve logged a total of 9,563 laps at the track, equivalent to 35,459.20 miles.

“I have raced at Sebring every year since 1999,” said Magnussen. “It’s a race I look forward to each year. The racing is some of the hardest we do all year, and the fans are great. The Corvette owners and fans are out in force each year, and that makes it a bigger race for us. We had a very good test and got in lots of laps, so we came away confident with how the Corvette feels around Sebring. We will see how things change with traffic and the different types of rubber that goes down during the week.”

The green flag will wave at Sebring for the 63rd Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Fueled by Fresh from Florida on this Saturday, March 21. Over the coruse of the 12 hours, video coverage will alternate between FOX Sports 1, FOX Sports 2 and IMSA.com.
