It’s that time again − Fortune magazine has its list of the “50 Most Powerful Women in Business” The list was first started in 1998 and featured a lot of women from “advertising, media, and publishing,” but the trend these days are women at blue-chip firms. General Motors CEO Mary Barra made it to #2, an improvement of 27 places from 2013.
As you probably know, Barra became the Big Three’s first female CEO this past January, then found herself embroiled in GM’s biggest hurdle yet − the 29 million strong ignition switch recall. But she’s up to the task, changing long-held institutions that have prevented the automaker from proactively dealing with the defective switch.
Fortune points out that seven out of the 50 − Barra included − were named to their positions in the past year. They feel this “suggests more turnover at the upper echelons of business” which may be a good thing for women as the old guard is changing.
