GM And ChargePoint To Install Up To 500 EV DC Fast Chargers Across The U.S.

GM and ChargePoint, which have been working together since the Cadillac ELR era, announced plans on Wednesday to accelerate America’s EV infrastructure growth by installing up to 500 “ultra-fast” charging ports across the U.S. They expect these new charge ports to be available to the public by the end of 2025.

The new chargers will use “GM Energy” branding and the clever Omni Port system. Omni Port is one charger that’s compatible with both Combined Charging System (CCS) and North American Charging Standard (NACS) charge ports, and no adapters are necessary. All GM EVs currently available use a CCS port, while Tesla models use the NACS protocol. This gives the new ChargePoint stations an advantage over charging a GM EV at a Tesla Supercharger station, which requires an adapter.

The new charging stations will also use ChargePoint’s Express Plus platform, which allows for charging speeds of up to 500kW. That’s more than enough to get the maximum charging speed out of any General Motors EV currently on the market.

“The transition to electric mobility continues to be driven by leaders such as General Motors offering innovative EVs and committing to make chargers as ubiquitous as possible,” said Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint. “Our collaboration with GM represents a significant investment in the infrastructure to enable fast and easy charging for all. Together, ChargePoint and GM will deliver a seamless fast charging experience via reliable charging hardware managed by our industry leading software platform.”

“Continuing to provide customers with better charging options helps to remove barriers to EV adoption and improve the ownership experience. Today, GM drivers have access to hundreds of thousands of places to charge and we are proud that this collaboration with ChargePoint adds even more reliable, accessible and convenient charging experiences,” said Wade Sheffer, GM Energy vice president. “With ultra-fast charging, Omni Port technology, and excellent customer experiences, this collaboration should be another reason why EV drivers and the EV-curious should be excited.”

It’s unclear at this time exactly where the new charging stations will be located other than inside the United States. General Motors and ChargePoint are using an incentive program to make owning and operating EV chargers easier for third-party charge point operators, like malls and grocery stores.

  • Wow! A whole 500!!! That will make a HUGE impact on charging availability! 500 isn't even sufficient for a small city.

    • In New York State electric demand charges will cost a commercial business or mall way more than they could ever hope to recoup by selling the electricity. That’s the fallacy of this drive to have private businesses put these DC fast chargers in, it’s not a sustainable business model. Believe me, personal experience.

  • Well good. The more fast chargers out there, the more comfortable I'll be traveling the great highways of the USA. Eventually, the anti- ev crowd will run thin on reasons on why not to buy electric.

    • @Oxoman
I suggest you do some HARD research and read up on how bad these EV batteries are for the environment. All you so called "environmentalists" (tree huggers) don't even realize the magnitude of how bad these batteries are!!!
I have no problem with people who choose to go this route, but I do have a problem, when these people only think for themselves and push this "agenda" on others, yet, don't understand that their agenda is actually hurting more and not actually helping!!

  • Wow that's almost 10 per state...that will solve everyone's problems... LMFAO..EVs are not going to make it...you buyers will be sorry...
