Here’s The GM Approved NACS Adapter

GM announced that its EVs are now officially compatible with the Tesla Supercharger network. This announcement adds over 17,800 new plugs to the North American charging network accessible to GM EVs. However, it’s not quite as simple as inserting a Tesla plug into your EV. To access this perk, GM owners will need a NACS adapter.

Tesla Supercharger stations use the North American Charging Standard (NACS) electric vehicle connector. The native plug protocol for GM EVs is the Combined Charging System (CCS), which is widely shared across non-Tesla EVs and charging stations. Until a NACS port becomes native to GM EVs, which will likely begin with the 2026 model year, charging a GM EV at a Tesla Supercharger station requires a NACS adapter.

Luckily for GM EV owners, a GM-approved NACS adapter is already available for sale through the myChevrolet, myGMC, and myCadillac apps for $225. Buyers can choose to pick it up at a local dealer free of charge or have it shipped to their door. As of this writing, GM is offering free shipping if they use promo code “NACSSHIP” at checkout.

GM uses multiple suppliers to produce the GM-approved plug adapter, so the adapters may not all look exactly alike. That’s why the images you see in this article are a little different. Regardless of which one you get, the directions for how to use it apply to all of them, and they all come with a one-year warranty.

The NACS adapter is 2.94 inches tall, 12.56 inches long, 5.56 inches wide, and weighs 2.91 pounds. Given its dimensions, it will probably be too bulky to store in a glovebox or center console. Luckily, many GM EVs have plenty of storage solutions in the cargo area, where you can stash away this adapter.

Here's The GM Approved NACS Adapter

Its safe operating temperature is between -22 and 122 degrees Fahrenheit, and its safe storage temperature is between -40 and 185 degrees Fahrenheit. So, no matter where you live, it’s probably safe to keep it in the car year-round.

The adapter’s owner’s manual includes a long list of safety warnings, most of which are pretty obvious (it specifically says not to step on it or damage it with sharp objects). However, one useful tip is not to use cleaning solvents to clean it. The best way to keep it clean is to store it safely when not in use so it doesn’t corrode in the first place. GM recommends not using it if you notice any damage or corrosion.

The process of using the NACS adapter is quite simple. According to the owner’s manual, GM recommends first plugging the adapter into the plug, ensuring that it’s latched in place. Once it’s securely fastened, just plug it into the car. When your charging session is complete, stop the session using the car’s infotainment system, the app, or the charging station itself. Unlock the car’s charge port, remove the adapter and the handle by pressing a button on top, then remove the adapter from the handle by pressing a latch on the bottom portion of the unit.

GM has confirmed that this adapter can be used with any GM electric vehicle. In addition to GM’s latest EVs on the BEV3 and BT1 platforms, the adapter will work with BEV2-based vehicles like the Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV. However, charge times will vary depending on the vehicle. The adapter is rated for up to 500 Amps/1,000 volts.

One of the big questions this official adapter raises is whether it’s mandatory to charge a GM EV at a Tesla Supercharger station. There are already other NACS to CCS adapters available. Will they void your warranty if you use one that isn’t officially licensed by GM? The short answer is no, but GM “strongly advises that customers use a GM NACS adapter for charging on the DC Fast Charger network, which have been specifically designed to protect GM EV batteries while charging.” Although using an aftermarket adapter won’t void your warranty, if components of the car are somehow damaged because of an aftermarket adapter, they won’t be covered under the terms of GM’s limited warranty.

  1. I am looking in the mycadillac app for my Lyriq and it is not showing available. Anyone able to find it?

    1. I’m a 2022 Chevy Bolt owner. I ordered the adapter through the my Chevy app… having it sent directly to my home by Fed-X which cost a little extra. It’s ordered but GM email receipt confirmation says it’s in back order status and they will inform me by email when it ships.

      1. Your Bolt will very likely require a Dealer software update.
This cannot be done over the air. It should be a free update, but only a dealer can install the software.

      1. Yes I enabled Tesla in my Chevy app. I did that when I ordered the adapter. Still shows in back order status. I spoke to a GM help desk person in Texas. He said he wasn’t surprised it’s in back order status currently because they are being flooded with orders..

    3. It is very hard to find, but I did find it and was able to order it. First open the app, the touch your initials in the upper right corner, then go to public charging, then to Tesla Supercharger, and the option to order should be below that. Not very easy.

  5. This article is really poorly written. Which plug? Do you need to use the Tesla app? You can’t continue to use non Tesla Level 3 chargers without the adapter?

    Reply
    1. You don’t use the Tesla app, only GM MyChevrolet, MyCadillac, etc. apps.

You can use any non-Tesla charger you want, you just don’t need to use the adapter.

      1. You can use the Tesla app (I have a Tesla too). Using the Tesla app the charge fee is cheaper than using the My Cadillac app

  6. The free shipping promo code didn’t remove the shipping fee. I contacted customer service, who didn’t address my issue and couldn’t tell me anything about estimated delivery.

I doubt they’ve been flooded with orders when they’ve made it difficult and confusing, and didn’t notify owners that this was now available. I found out yesterday in my news feed.

    1. If you go to those same feeds everyone is ordering one. Also, GM might notify customers. You just happened to find out early.

  7. How to order your NACS DC Adapter:

Go into the MyCadillac app then tap on your initials in the upper right hand corner. scroll down and select Public Charging. You will see Tesla Supercharger, select Activate and set up for the Tesla Supercharger. Once that is done go back to the Public Charging Screen and next to the Tesla Supercharger you will see Order Adapter. Follow the screens from there. I hope this helps. 🙂

      1. It’s the same process if you want to activate plug’n charge through EVgo.

At least GM is consolidating charger access into their app instead of require Tesla, EVgo, Chargepoint, etc. apps needing to be installed and providing credit card information to them.

  8. It is not on my Chevy App. I own a 2023 Bolt EV. I would purchase it, if it was on my app. Chevy should make this available through Amazon or other 3rd party sites. As usual Chevy doesn’t care about good support to customers, I’m at a loss of what Chevy does care about, other than their own profit, which is understandable. But customer support is part of their profit loss or gain. IMHO.

    1. I read in the NYT today that Ford and Rivian are providing the adapter to those that bought EVs from them for FREE! Since I have a 2018 VOLTplug-in hybrid, it doesn’t matter to me because it can only take a level 1 for level 2 charger, but if I had any of the current EVs that that can use Tesla’s super charger, I’d be hopping mad that GM is charging $225.00. What a rip off! If you wish, Goggle the article in the TIMES entitled “All GM Electric Vehicles Gain Access To Tesla’s Network Chargers”, Page B5 in the BUSINESS Section.

They also told me they would check back with me in 3 days, but that did not happen either. GM failed to resource this roll-out adequately.

It is a little difficult to do, but with persistence one should be able to order.
My order so far says nothing about back orders. Rather it says I’ll have it in two to three days.

One thing Cadillac EV Conceierge suggested I do as initially the “Public Charging ” did not appear after clicking on my initials, was to either log out and log in on app; or delete app and reinstall
I deleted the app, reinstalled and all worked well

  13. For those who (like me) can’t order the adapter through the app: The MyChevy app on my phone does not have the “public charging” option, and I wonder if the reason is that I refuse to subscribe to OnStar. Any other non-subscribers to OnStar in the same situation?

    Reply
    1. I had the same can’t see the public charging issue in the app. After a LONG chat session with GM’s EV Concierge, they said,
“I may have found out why your app is not showing the Public Charging option. In order to make sure one adapter is ordered per EV in order to keep up with the demand, GM is requiring OnStar be activated for each individual purchasing the adapter. A paid subscription is not required, as your 2020 Bolt EV already comes equipped with EV Access at no cost to you.”

Later they said, “ If you have any questions or concerns you can reach back out to us at 1-833-382-4389.”

BTW: I don’t plan on stealing one, but it will hinder me from buying one if it can be easily stolen. I certainly won’t buy a used one, in that it will likely be “hot”. They may offer them on e-Fence (otherwise known as e-Bay).

So I interpret this to mean it won’t void the WHOLE warranty, just anything damaged by use of a third party adapter. Like just all the modules … the expensive stuff.

I’m so xptl with GM. They open the ability to order at 8:00 AM Central DST which is 6:00 AM PDT allowing everyone on the East Coast and central US to order BEFORE most of us on the West Coast are even awake, so our orders are on back order. Typical GM concern regarding their customers!

Unfortunately, this has been pretty typical of how GM interfaces with its customers the last few years – rolling out cars with half baked software and seemingly untested web interactions. The photos are top quality, but there is so much emphasis in trying to get users to buy a new car, GM has forgotten (or ignores) its current owners.

This will hurt sales in the long run, but no one at GM seems to care.

  29. Have a 2019 Bolt. Tried to order the adapter using MyChevrolet app — no luck. Tried deleting and reinstalling the app but the interface did not change. Yesterday, in a chat session with GM, was told I must have at least Onstar EV Access Plan and Connect Access Plan activated. No charge for either of these plans which I requested. Although I received an email indicating that Onstar was activated, I had to wait almost a day before another app deletion and reinstallation with manual sign in allowed the app to load and work properly. Adapter ordered finally!

Thank you to those who posted the steps to order the adapter beginning with pressing on your initials on the upper right side of the screen.
