The Holden lineup is in for some big changes come 2018. The current VF Commodore will cease production this coming October and will be replaced by the 2018 NG Commodore, a near carbon copy of the 2018 Opel Insignia Grand Sport.
With the new Commodore, a new Sportwagon comes, too, and it’s been spied wearing the lightest of camouflage in Melbourne. Sitting in traffic, there’s no hiding the fact its a Holden Commodore Sportwagon. It wears an identical front fascia to the Insignia/Commodore/Regal and its rear end is almost entirely exposed.
In Australia, the Holden Commodore receives a 3.6-liter V6 engine option, something unavailable with the 2018 Buick Regal Sportback and Regal TourX wagon. In fact, the only engine for the more rugged Holden Commodore Tourer—our Regal TourX—is the V6 engine. In the U.S., buyers can opt for a more powerful four-cylinder, but that’s it.
Holden owned up to the prototype and said locals may see additional prototypes scampering about.
“There’s a few cars around undergoing testing,” Holden spokesperson, Mark Flintoft, said.
“We have had some in the Victorian Alps for tests and now the city ones would be looked at for things such as the performance of the DAB (digital) radio in CBD and suburban areas, and for the performance of the suspension tuning over roads including those with tram tracks.”
“The program is being expanded and later on you will see a lot more Commodores on the road.”
The 2018 Holden Commodore will reportedly launch early next year, likely in the month of February as Australian summer begins to come to a close.
