Details about the U.S.-spec Chevy Cruze diesel have been pretty hush-hush. We know that it’s coming sometime next year, and we know its been going through the validation process in Lordstown, Ohio. Additionally, it could end up being called the “Eco-D“. But other than the speculation of achieving 50 miles per gallon, the Cruze Eco-D’s engine has been a mystery.
According to The General, the 2.0L diesel engine is being co-developed by GM’s Powertrain teams in Torino, Italy (Turin) and Pontiac, Michigan. GM engineers from Russelsheim, Germany are supporting the project by developing the accessory drive, acoustic cover and other specialized components.
In other words, this engine is all-new, born from global development, and will in turn most likely launch wherever the current Cruze diesel is sold today. And if you consider the global midcycle refresh set for the Cruze also around the 2014 model-year timeframe, Americans could have one helluva Jetta TDI alternative on their hands. The program’s assistant chief engineer also claims that the new engine is quiet to the point where “the diesel and gasoline engine is going to be difficult to discern,” from an outward perspective.
Will this be the same diesel engine that will be found in the Cadillac ATS? It’s very possible.

Hmm isn't the engine made by VM Motori ?? Torino twin city of Detroit ??? FIAT city yes.
Also the ECO label of an Diesel has nothing to do with Ecology because a Gas engine is far more environment friendly than a Diesel even with DPF. I wonder what the difference is between the US (Eco) Diesel and the current Cruze (European/Korean)Diesel ?

I'm confused as to whether the Eco-D will have a mild hybrid Belt Alternator Starter (BAS) system or not? The gasoline Cruze Eco does have BAS, and I know GM has done tests in Europe on Diesel powertrains with BAS:
