Ripping donuts at a sideshow is a popular activity among those enthusiasts that like to live outside the law. But, as is the often the case, the folks hoping to look cool at these event don’t always have the skills to pull it off, as is evidenced by this particular Chevy Silverado driver.
For those readers who may be unaware, a sideshow is an illegal gathering of car enthusiasts wherein participants block off public roads or vacant slabs of tarmac to perform a variety of automotive stunts, including donuts, drifting, burnouts, and ghostriding, the latter of which includes opening the doors, having the driver get out while the car is still moving, and either dancing or posing next to their vehicle as it continues on. For those folks looking for an example, we recently covered one failed attempt at ghostriding wherein the driver accidentally ran himself over.
First gaining traction in the ‘70s in California’s Bay Area, sideshows have since become popular around the country. Naturally, the driving skills of those involved in these impromptu events is varied, with some of those attempting to perform a stunt failing in dramatic fashion, occasionally resulting in injury or even death.
Luckily, no one was hurt when this Chevy Silverado driver attempted a donut around a median – although only just.
The video starts with the driver in the Chevy Silverado doing a burnout, then swinging the pickup around a curb. The rear end of the Chevy steps out, and it appears as though the driver is trying to pull a wide donut around the center median.
Unfortunately, the driver goes wide, clipping an adjacent curb. One nearby onlooker is nearly flattened by the truck’s rear bumper, jumping out of the way at the very last moment.
As a result of the driver’s miscalculation, the Chevy Silverado ends up losing its rear wheel, which snaps off after contacting the curb with a sickening crunch noise. Interestingly, the dislocated wheel and tire slide underneath the pickup, which, as some commenters point out, likely prevented further damage that could be caused by the body dragging across the asphalt.
