The selling environment hasn’t been kind to the current 2015 Chevrolet Volt. Gasoline prices has plummeted from their near $4 per gallon cost, and news of a second-generation 2016 Chevrolet Volt have nearly stagnated sales of the plug-in vehicle.
Counting these variables, General Motors has announced it will officially cease production of the 2015 Chevrolet Volt early this Summer in order to wind down current inventory levels of the car. A new report from The Wall Street Journal proclaims General Motors has a 210 day supply of current-generation Chevrolet Volts. Putting that into perspective, there are enough Volts to last the country until November of this year. This doesn’t even take the amount of lease vehicle to be turned into dealers this year, either.
To date, GM and the Chevrolet brand have sold 70,000 Volts, falling short of initial company estimates. Adding to the current Volt’s woes were first quarter sales numbers showing the Nissan Leaf had far overtaken the PHEV in sales. 1,874 Volts were sold during the three-month period, while 4,085 Leafs found new homes.
Any serious buyer is surely awaiting the 2016 Chevrolet Volt which offers a sleeker design, an improved range of 50 miles purely on electric charge and more notably a rumored lower base price point. In the meantime, buyers should be able to find a very good deal in the first-generation Volt as dealers prepare to make a push on moving them off the lot.
