Corvette Racing and its two C7.Rs qualified sixth and tenth yesterday afternoon for tonight’s Brickyard Grand Prix at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The team’s fastest lap was put in by Antonio Garcia with a time of 1:22.593 at an average speed of 106.309 mph in his and Jan Magnussen’ s No. 3 C7.R.
The No.4 C7.R put in a 1:23.237 lap at an average speed of 105.487 mph in the hands of Tommy Milner, putting it in last place on the GTLM grid for the start of today’s race. Milner and teammate Oliver Gavin are currently tied for fourth with Ricahrd Lietz and Nick Tandy in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship’s GT Le Mans category, with teammates Garcia and Magnussen in first.
Garcia recognized the sixth place position on the starting grid is less than ideal, but pointed out the team was only a tenth of a second behind the second place car, representing an extremely close and competitive field.
“We were two tenths off which I think I proved again that we took 100 percent out of what we had,” said Garcia. “So we have confidence toward the race. Anything can happen so we might be sixth, but we are only a tenth off second. It’s very close out there. There is a lot to be gained or lost in traffic. I think that is where Corvette Racing will gain on everybody, and if we run a smart race we can go for a fifth victory.”
The No. 3 car is currently enjoying a four-race winning streak after securing wins at Long Beach, Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen and Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. Magnussen and Garcia will be looking to continue their winning streak, while Milner and Gavin will be searching for their first win of the season. Milner noted the No. 4 car has “been struggling all year” in terms of pace, but noted the last place qualifying position leaves them “nowhere else to go but up,” when the green flag drops at 5:30 tonight.
