Repairing 2.6 million vehicles with faulty ignition switches is shaping to be a sluggish task for General Motors dealers, which is why the company is offering its dealers $250 in redeemable credit at an online gift shop to both dealership service and parts managers to see too it that at least 90 percent of the ignition-switch replacement kits shipped to them are installed in vehicles by July 7, according to Automotive News.
Officially, it’s called the “Ignition Switch Recall Completion Initiative,” and will also randomly select 50 qualifying dealerships to receive $4,000 in incentive credits, to be split between parts and service managers. Even more tantalizing is that just one dealership will be randomly picked for its parts and service managers to share $10,000, according to the report that references dealer notices.
Along with trying to get dealers motivated, GM will attempt to contact owners who have not yet initiated the process of getting their cars fixed via email. GM has also relaxed on the usually stingy rules it has placed on dealerships for ordering replacement parts.
Through June 16, GM dealers have installed new ignition switches on 199,457 of the 2.6 million of the recalled cars affected, and GM has shipped nearly 400,000 repair kits.
Plus, a nationwide lease on all-electric off-road Pickup and SUV.
