The GMC Syclone holds a special place in the heart of many automotive enthusiasts, breaking the mold as one of the first true high-performance pickups. Launched in 1991, the Syclone paired the turbocharged 4.3L LB4 V6 engine with all-wheel-drive to deliver impressive acceleration, even rivaling many sports cars of its day. The Syclone’s limited production numbers and cult following have cemented its place in automotive history, making it a sought-after gem in the enthusiast community. Now, we’re watching a factory GMC Syclone take on a homebuilt alternative, all courtesy of the following video.
In the video, we see a group of enthusiasts take over Old Bridge Township Raceway Park to test out the performance capabilities of these two pickups. Among them is Tony Angelo’s “SikeClone,” a custom tribute to the original GMC Syclone built with a mix of clever workarounds and budget-conscious parts. Under the hood is a 4.3L V6 engine sourced from an Astro van, an Amazon turbo kit, and various other modifications, including Corvette wheels and custom touches.
Before the race, the crew explore the track, assessing both the drag strip and the road course while preparing their trucks for competition. Despite the budget-friendly build, the SikeClone stands out for its impressive performance capabilities, and the team seems eager to see how the factory Syclone stacks up against the home-brew alternative.
The racing is done in three rounds. In round one, the factory GMC Syclone takes the win, but the race is tighter than initially expected. After a few adjustments, the crew run it back, with SikeClone earning the victory the second time around. The final round results in a good degree of wheel spin from the factory truck, handing the overall victory to the SikeClone.
After the competition, the SikeClone goes for a test drive, providing us with yet further demonstration of its raw, unbridled performance. Capping it off is a few all-wheel-drive donuts for good measure.
