Opel is introducing vastly improved engines and transmissions but without a significant reduction in weight, Opel cars Will remain uncompetitive in terms of performance and fuel economy. One cannot change the laws of physics. The comparison beween an Astra and a Golf is telling. A difference of around 150 kg or more, is very visual in performance and fuel consumption data.
The challenge faling Opel, is to reduce weight while retaining a quality feel. BMW’s 3 series is a good example of a car where the quality feel has been affected by ambitious weight reduction targets. The result is a that this car has fallen behind versus Audi’s A4 in quality look and feel.
@Luc4cars The weight issues should be addressed with the upcoming global GM platform replacements for Delta and Epsilon, respectively named D2 and E2. The goal is to reduce mass, increase rigidity, and to support cars and same-size CUVs with the same architectures — which is not the case now with Delta/Theta and Epsilon/Lambda being different enough to warrant an entirely different architecture.
