ParticipantI just want to know what type of motor oil that should be used on the Theta twins with the 3.0 V6? I know it’s the Dexos synthetic, but are there any other ones? It seems like Dexos synthetic are a bit expensive despite not being heard much like penzoil or castro GTX.

ParticipantGM does not require synthetic in any vehicle. Dexos is not a synthetic oil spec., its a synthetic blend.
Any 5W-30 that says on the label that it meets dexos1 is perfectly fine to use. It does not have to be GM approved. GM only recommends what makes them money. They are trying to keep more of the aftermarket business for themselves and they make it difficult for customers to find aftermarket products.

ParticipantBut what about in the case of the 3.0L V6? Because I do know that with engine like the 4.6 northstar then you need to have synthetic

ParticipantDexos is a oil specification and a GM owned trademark. Just about every oil company has an oil that meets dexos1. The ones that pay GM get to put the dexos logo on their label (pay to play). But GM no longer specifies synthetic oil, they just say use oil meeting the dexos1 spec. According to GM, dexos1 spec superceeds all previous oil spec’s.
The reason you pay more for dexos1 is because GM gets a percentage of the oil companies sales for allowing them to use the dexos logo on their oil containers. GM is making millions of $$ of the oil you buy with a dexos logo on it.
The 3.0L is no different than all the other GM engines when it comes to oil requirements. That does not mean you cannot use a synthetic oil. It use nothing but synthetic oil and GM does not make any money from the brand I use.

ParticipantI just wasn’t sure about it because like I said before the 4.6 Northstar found on the cadillacs mostly uses the Mobil 1 synthetic..

ParticipantThe new GM dexos1â„¢ specification is designed to improve performance beyond previous GM specifications. GM dexos1â„¢ supersedes, and is backwards compatible with, previous GM specifications including GM 6094M, GM 4718M (Synthetic Oil spec) and GM-LL-A-025 in an SAE 5W-30 viscosity.

ParticipantI work for a lube shop if your oil cap says dexos you must put synthetic oil mobile 1, havoline, is approved if you put any other grade of oil in your car there can be permanent damage. Now if you really want to put a cheaper grade most shops make you sign a waver before putting lower grade oil in your car
