ParticipantMy 2014 Malibu 1LTZ only has a little over 300 miles on it When I come to a red light or it is otherwise idling for a prolonged time, the engine doesn’t always stop. Is this normal? The outside temperature has been mild. I was not running the A/C or any other system at the time. It works at some prolonged stops, but not each and every time. What other factors would cause this? Has anyone else experienced this?

ParticipantHappens to my 2014 2LT as well, nothing to be concerned about. The system monitors quite a few variables to determine whether or not it is worth it efficiency-wise to shut to motor off at a stop. Throttle position, brake force, climate control settings, engine coolant/oil temp, vehicle speed, just to name a few. But it all goes into some algorithm so it may not seem like it makes much sense when it stops versus when it doesn’t but the boys at GM Powertrain have a pretty good idea of what they’re doing. Definitely won’t engage as much in stop and go traffic but I find pushing the brake pedal a little harder at the end of a full stop can induce shut-off. Hope that helps! I gotta say I’m pretty happy with my Bu so far.

ParticipantHere it is a year and half later, and I still have issues with the stop/start feature. Over the weekend I drove over 100 miles and the engine didn’t stop one time when I came to red lights. I applied the brake as I usually do. The heater wasn’t on and the traffic lights were not that close together. I took it to the dealer a while ago and they said nothing was wrong with it. It’s kicked in when I’ve driven a far less distance. When I go for the safety inspection, I will mention this again.

Keymaster@jagpitt17 Well, like Kevin G mentioned, the system monitors all kinds of factors and it will determine whether or not and when to engage the engine stop. Does the system work at other times?

ParticipantIt did work at other times until a few days ago. When I applied the brake, the car went into auto stop as it should have, but 3 SECONDS LATER, the engine started again. I did NOT take my foot off of the brake. My foot stayed in the same position. No heat on, etc. Why would the engine have started again? Since then, the auto stop hasn’t worked. I will wait until after the holidays to take it in. Is it possible for this feature to fail? If the dealer says nothing’s wrong with it, am I up the creek???

KeymasterIt doesn’t sound like it is malfunctioning. It will turn on and off as it sees fit based on a significant amount of variables.
For instance, if it senses the engine temperature was dropping below an optimal level (due to it being cold outside), it can kick in the engine.
I would just let it run, knowing that it’s operating in a way thay it sees fit. Again, doesn’t sound like anything is wrong with it.

ParticipantYou are absolutely right, It works when it feels like it. I am finished with this topic. Thanks for all the input.
