ParticipantI started to experience a “Shift to Park” problem on my 2018 Chevrolet Malibu (22862 miles) even though the transmission is clearly in park. The engine shuts off but the electronics will not. Jiggling the transmission control handled worked a few days, but the problem is getting worse. Today (about a week of this experience), I struggled for over 30 minutes trying to clear the condition, involving many engine starts and shutdowns. Finally, I got it to shut down normally by
1) starting the car,
2) moving the transmission control handle all the way Low,
3) setting the parking break,
4) with some force, placing the transmission control handle to park,
5) turned off the engine normally (this occurred in my garage which is on level ground).I am not sure if I discovered a solution or if was simply luck. One thing is for sure, the problem is annoying.
Called dealership during ordeal. Had to wait 10 minutes to talk to someone. Service department employees were out to lunch and would not be back for “hour to hour and a half” (that is a great lunch break). I needed someone to tell me how to fully turn off my car. No one was available to even look up the problem in a technical manual. They could possibly “squeeze me in” mid afternoon, but would not have the parts to fix the problem. Also, loaner vehicles were discontinued last December and they would not be able to take me home. I asked, “So your asking me to bring in my car although you cannot fix it and I cannot leave it and get a ride home?” I was told, “That’s correct.” I made a tentative 2 PM appointment on this Friday afternoon. I am hoping that the car will shut down automatically after 30 minutes (per what one person told me over the phone). Unfortunately, the car did not shut down; however, I managed to get it to shut down after several more attempts.
If anyone else has successfully made the “Shift to Park” issue go away until the car can be serviced, please share what you did. I am not sure if my experience was a solution or luck. I guess I will have to leave my car parked it the garage over the weekend. Cannot afford to be out and not be able to shut down the car and leave it in a parking lot.
