Repeated Engines Failing

Hoping for some insight. I have a 2009 GMC Sierra 4wd, 5.3L (original) engine. The original engine died at 78K and it was determined to be a known GMC issue with scoring the cylinders etc. A GMC remanufactured (second) engine was installed and I paid 1000. The replacement (second) engine had valve failures that were repaired. Ultimately it died at 132,000 miles with catastrophic engine failure. I paid for a GMC remanufactured (third) engine. This (third) engine died at 172,000 of a similar fate. I paid for a GMC remanufactured (fourth) engine. This fourth engine just died at 194K miles. Thankfully this one is still under warranty. All engines were installed by the GMC dealership. My truck is regularly maintained with oil changes on or ahead of schedule. I don’t race it, offroad or dog it in any way. We do tow a 3800lb travel trailer and I use the trailer tow mode and never over 65mph.

There has got to be a common denominator causing these failures other than towing a small trailer. Could the Advance Engine Control Module in the Active Fuel Management system be causing the valves to engage and disengage abnormally or could it be something else.

I go back to the dealership Monday for a discussion. Thanks

What kind of oil are you using? Viscosity that is called for, 5W-30 or something else.

You personally install the oil or you trust the dealer? Dealers service advisers are clueless and have little to no knowledge what the service dept is using. They may not be actually using Mobil 1 but some bulk oil that is supposedly equivalent to Mobil 1. You would be wise to buy the oil yourself and then you know for sure its actually Mobil 1.

I trust my garage and have watched the change. And change ahead of schedule. Thanks

Well I personally don’t think its an engine problem. One bad engine maybe but 4? I’d look somewhere else for the problem. Change dealers and brands of oil.

Help- It’s my understanding that these lifter/valve issues (both AFM and DFM) have been around for a number of years. I even have read that GM has sent letters to dealers to repair inventory on lots for the 2021 model year. Does anyone know if they fixed this issue for the refreshed 2022?
