I read a GM bulletin recently and found it interesting, They say up to one quart of oil consumption for 4000 miles is “normal” for the LM2 and LZO engine. More in severe usage such as towing. They even add an extra quart at the factory when filling them for the first time. I am at the second change , now have 10,000 miles on it, 5000 since first oil change and it appears my oil level is down a half quart. I don’t do a lot of towing but some of my 7000# camper. I don’t find this shocking but still unsettling considering GM says this is “normal”. I wonder if the light weight 0W-20W oil has anything to do with this. Does anyone think using a little heavier oil would help? There is also an aftermarket oil pan available for this engine that will hold an extra 2 quarts. Not that this would fix the issue, only take the concern away of running low on oil. I think it is bizarre that we should have to go to these lengths. Give us your experience and opinions on this.
I can’t believe so many are concerned about a heated steering wheel or other things but zero are interested in a manufaturer accepted oil consumption of a new vehicle.
This is about the dumbest GM has done in my 50 years in the dealership business.. To tell a customer that a quart of oil in 5000 miles is acceptable is just wrong. With that said if you should not change the weight of your oil. Deep pan would be something in the aftermarket…
