2023 Duramax1500
ParticipantI ordered a 2023 GMC Denali Duramax July 8, 2022.
I’ve watched numerous reviews on YouTube about the 3.0 baby Duramax. What’s the advice for a new owner? Def fluid, oil changes, real world MPG, towing, winter cold starts, reliability?
Thanks for the feedback.

ParticipantGood luck with your order. Hope you receive it within the next year. Hope they don’t eliminate the very features they advertise for the vehicle and that many other available vehicles already have. I hope they keep you informed in real time and not keep you at the mercy of virtual bots and scripted advisors to let you know what is going on with such an important decision you made. That your local dealer agent also have access to what is going on at GMC production and also the dreaded black hole called Logistics. As far as a Duramx Diesel 3.0, I would be happy with anything right now. I considered Diesel when the price of gasoline was about the same. At least for now, good luck with your Diesel.

ParticipantThanks for the kinds words. So far so good with keeping me informed, just trying to be patient until I get the truck. I sold my Chevy Silverado, so I’m down to driving my Corvette daily. Need a truck before winter.

ParticipantI ordered in March and received my refreshed LTZ 1500 with the baby max in June. I have put 5500 miles on it so far with zero issues. I have averaged 30 mpg total, some interstate, some in town, and a lot of country driving. The engine has unbelievable torque and plenty of hp. I am amazed at how smooth this engine teams up with the 10 speed transmission. As for DEF, so far my gauge has gone down to 5/8, so very little. I know towing which I have done a little bit of will consume more since it is proportionate to fuel consumed. I did do a bit of towing, a tilt flatbed trailer with a two ton roller on it and I was getting just under 20 mpg but as for power it was not fazed by it.
I changed the oil at 5000 and plan to continue to do so. I can’t tell you anything about winter starts personally since I haven’t put it through one yet but don’t anticipate any issues. It does come with glow plugs and block heater with cord and easy access connection in front bumper. Since I keep my truck in the garage all the time I don’t believe the heater will be needed. Keep in mind your truck will likely have the “revised” 3.0 with a bit more HP and torque. Hope that doesn’t lessen your mpg. My truck was allocated on March 17th, TPW April 11th. Due to two week shutdown in April at the Ft. Wayne plant my TPW got pushed into May. Once built it took between two and three weeks to get on a train out of Roanoke, IN to Selkirk, NY. When it arrived in Selkirk around June 13th my dealer sent his carrier to retrieve it. All told I was 15 months getting a new truck since in March of 21 I first ordered one that never got allocated and then in December of 21 I ordered a refreshed and finally got an allocation in March of 22. I had wanted a High Country but at that time the tech package was on constraint in the HC but available in the LTZ, go figure. I went with the LTZ and loaded it up with everything the HC would have had. Very happy with outcome. I was also lucky since the only thing it came without is the front and rear park assist, to be later retrofitted. I was unable to order the trailering mirrors, as has been the issue for some time now. At the time of my build the wheel well liners were an issue as was the heated and cooled seats but I was again lucky and neither were constrained on mine. Wish you the best of luck with your order and keep us informed along the way.-

Participant@pmanches54 Wow thank you for the detailed reply and your real world experience with your truck. I’ve owned several vehicles but this is my 1st New Truck so I look forward to adding some miles to it. From what I’ve read unofficially the LZO Duramax is supposed to keep the same fuel economy. 305 HP/495 TQ, Max RPM 3750 HP/2750 TQ with steel pistons, new fuel injectors and turbo retuned sounds like a great engine. I’ll update this chat as soon as the ball moves done the assembly line.

ParticipantI have 7k miles on my 2022 Crew Cab Elevation Duramax. I drive all highway miles and have averaged 25mpg, but I’m usually going 80mph plus. I just did some towing and got 20mpg. I was very happy with that. Powerful little engine. No issues at all towing. First time towing with a diesel and it was like there was nothing back there.

ParticipantI have a 22 crew cab LTZ with the 3.0. I love it, smooth power band all the way up and down. I don’t drive quite like you, some interstate but mostly two lane highways and in town driving but I get 30 plus and on longer trips upwards of 32 mpg. I did a little bit of towing of trailer weighing about 8000 lbs. and also got about 20 mpg. I have just under 7000 miles on it so far. This is also my first experience with a diesel but like my dealer told me when I ordered it I would be happy with it and I am extremely happy with it. So glad I didn’t go with my original choice of the 6.2 now with the fuel prices. For 20% more per gallon for diesel I am getting 50% better mpg. Thats if I didn’t burn premium like they recommend for the 6.2, that is equal or exceeding the price of diesel. I hear people say “well you have to buy DEF” well so far I haven’t added to it yet and gauge is on 3/8ths. Not a big deal at all.

Participant@ses886 thanks for the real world MPG on your crew cab elevation. 25 MPG with speeds of 80 MPG is excellent. Can’t wait to receive my truck.

Finally after 8 months of waiting I got my truck kind of… The truck I ordered is still at 3800 with no new info on transportation from GM or my Sales manager. I searched in a 2000 mile radius of my home and found several Denali truck in the specification of my build. I drove to Missouri 6 hours to purchase a truck they had in stock.Needless to say the truck is amazing!! The best mpg was 33 and an average of 27 mpg. The 3.0 LZO is quiet but powerful with lots of low end torque. I have not crossed the 500 mile break in so I’m still driving easy. Thanks for the feedback on this post.
First Mods already complete paint protected film
on the front bumper and headlights. Window tint and now I’m pricing a hood tonneau cover. I’ve used Bakflip any suggestions?-

ParticipantCongrats on your new truck! Great call on the PPF for the bumper, I’ve noticed on mine that that the paint is very soft (Titanium Rush) and in retrospect I would have gotten PPF on the bumper and the hood. As for Tonneau cover, I have the Bakflip MX4 and love it. I paid just under $1k for it (Carbon pro version). Just note that if you have the carbon pro bed, you need to make sure you order tonneau cover specific to the carbon pro bed.
Enjoy the truck!

ParticipantOwners manual says no need to plug your truck in unless its below zero. Do it anyways below 20, your truck will thank you later.
Buy def at the pump. Its cheaper and too many horror stories of a**holes refilling the jugs with water and returning to store. If you miss the seal being broken you’re on the hook for repair.
ALWAYS treat your fuel for winter, don’t trust the fuel haulers that deliver to the gas station to do it. Your mileage will suffer but its better than walking because you gelled up.
Sold my 5th wheel and traded the dually in for a 1500 gasser, life is much easier.

Participant@firepoggy Thanks for the advice on taking good care of the diesel. Do you have a brand of fuel that you use Shell, Speedway etc..I’ll strongly consider buying Def at the pump.

2023 Duramax1500
Participant@ firepoggy A little over 4,000 miles on the truck. Took a road trip to MI from TN on one tank of fuel. Still had over 100 miles left on the tank. Averaged 27 miles hwy and city 23.9
Question about the key fob.. more than one time I have accidentally unlocked the truck. This weekend I accidentally rolled down all the windows. I turned off the remote windows down in the settings. I have placed my keys in my shirt pocket of jacket pocket to prevent this from happening.
I have also accidentally touched the tailgate button and realized once home my tailgate was down. There needs to be a warning on the dash for this. I have to be careful when reaching for items under the row of buttons.
Has anyone else experience this?

Participant@ firepoggy I have put 1 box of DEF in the truck so far which filled it up. Used only 1 bar of Def on my trip 1,176 round trip to and from MI. I’m loving the truck so far. Speedway is my perfected fuel station. But I found Top Tier fuel on FT Campbell.
