My son’s 2006 Chevy Malibu SS 3.9L sometimes randomly won’t start. The engine won’t crank. I have discovered that when this happens if I turn the key far enough to shift the car to neutral the car will start in neutral, It will then start when in park several more times before randomly not starting again. My research tells me that the cause may be a bad neutral safety switch.
One repair manual tells me that I need a special tool to align the switch in the correct position so neutral is neutral etc. My problem is none of the parts outlets I have checked with see anything in their books about an alignment tool.
My question is do I need the alignment tool? Also, any advice or input on how to install the new switch, or whether that is likely to be the cause of the non starting.
