Does anyone have any experience with an HHR, considering buying a 2010 model. Any red flags?

I have a buddy with a 2009 and he’s been trouble-free for the most part. He had minor issues with the windshield wiper motor and an electric ghost that somehow thought a passenger was always present in the front seat, which resulted in the passenger airbag sensor being active all the time. But both were fixed under warranty.

He has close to 40,000 miles on it now. I’ve been trying to get him to come on here but he’s a bit computer-illiterate.

PS: have you driven the one you’re thinking of buying? Is it new or pre-owned?

Alex, I found a 2011 LT2 Leather/everything with 23,000 for 14 grand. Drove great, very impressive. Great price… Not sure if it has 2.2 or 2.4 need to find out for sure, will pick up this weekend.

@yabadabadoo I’m just curious if you’re gonna cut out the floor in that HHR you’re getting? In that case, who cares about the engine.

Lex, Nice… Uh only if I time warp back 40,000 years.

@yabadabadoo That sounds like a nice ride! Unless I’m mistaken, the 2LTs only offer the 2.4.

Do you know if it’s a Certified Pre-Owned? At that age and mileage, I’d say most likely. It’s probably coming off a 2 year/24,000 mile lease.

I got the ride, it is very nice.

Congrats man! Is it a certified pre-owned?

Not GM certified but did get it at Chevy dealer.

I wonder why it wouldn’t be a GM CPO. Seems that it would fall into the age and mileage requirents… You get an extended warranty and certain other perks with a CPO unit.

Coincidentally, we’ll have an article about the HHR on on the next couple of days. B-)

Ya now I am scratching my head about that. I think this was a run about for the dealer, maybe. Because way below blue book they didn’t certify it.

Interesting. I’d ask them about it anyway. You’ll want to know in a few years if something goes wrong… just in case, you know?

We got an extended warranty with it that we did pay extra for, next time I will have to make sure I am getting a GM certified, before I sign the dotted line. It’s hard to follow the ins and outs of the dealership experience, part of the reason I had avoided it. But the interest rate they got me was excellent. And the value seemed really good so we added the extended warranty.

It is a 2.2 liter, I think the 2.4 is an option on anything above LT, similar to the Malibu, you can still get the LTZ package with the 4 cyl.

Really? For some reason I thought the 2LTs were all 2.4s. Looks like I was mistaken.

Congrats anyway! She should get great fuel economy and run for 150,000!

PS: we just published a piece outlining GM’s Certified Pre-Owned program. Some interesting comments in there:

Loving the flex fuel option on the HHR, a Mobil near me has E85 for $2.99. So the first month and a half has been good though it has had some lows. We have had some snowy weather that has challenged the tires on my HHR, will upgrade with better all seasons next year for sure. The dealer put some watered down windshield washer fluid in the container causing the fluid to freeze causing the sprayers to not work in a major snow storm after I got the vehicle. Other then that this vehicle is probably the most enjoyable commuter type car I have ever driven rivaling foreign cars I have driven. This vehicle is smooth and responsive from a handling standpoint, the engine has really impressed me for a 4 cylinder and a 2.2 at that, add E85 and the engine is surprisingly responsive. Honestly I was dreaming of a manual transmission, that would really make this car fun. Don’t get me wrong this vehicle isn’t perfect but 4 the money, I was having a hard time finding a comparable value. Inside this vehicle is decked out with leather and heated seats, the seats are very stiff possibly to stiff for many people including my wife. I love the interior including the upright position of the seats and the stiffness or hardness of the seats does not bother me. Why you should consider a used HHR; if you don’t mind retro styled vehicles the functionality this vehicle is excellent other than back seat leg room is awkwardly small. But in reality what this vehicle is is a commuter vehicle offering added functionality, with seats down a cavernous back opens up to transport all kinds of objects. I went to the dealership to checkout a silver HHR and a couple other vehicles all GM of course, after driving the Silver HHR the dealer directed me to my white HHR with cool running boards and sun roof, nice chrome rims that match the mirrors and the roof rack. After driving my HHR I didn’t even test one of the other cars, I was sold… If you are looking for a nice used commuter car, (although not great gas mileage) with great functionality and enjoyable to drive I strongly recommend the HHR, mine was actually a fleet (rental) vehicle, this might scare many but this would be my third Chevy that was purchased either directly through a rental company or through a dealer, the value you can get is excellent and my vehicles have been worry free other than normal car issues alternators etc.. I wanted to share my experience with my HHR and GMAuthority seemed to be an excellent place; my other vehicles include A 2006 Chevy Malibu Maxx (an excellent value and the most worry free vehicle I have ever owned, a great 3.5 V6 engine), and a 98 Chevy 2 door blazer (I just retired my 99 4 door blazer with 240,000 miles as my trade in). Hope you enjoyed the read, and I hope we will all consider purchasing GM vehicles.

If you don’t mind, what kind of economy are you seeing with the e85?

Thinking about 22 mpg to 24 average, no Highway take back roads to get to work 18 miles. Last week was first week on E85 to be honest, put in $30 last Friday, drove wife’s car all weekend then drove to work all week and an event Tuesday about 40 minute drive from my pad. tank was about 1/8 full Thursday night added $30 drove allot this weekend tank sits at less then 3/4 tank. I just reset the info on the dash so I will give an update. But if Iam refilling at $30 a week I will be happy for sure.

@yabadabadoo Wow, that’s pretty good. Once you drive this week on the tank, tell us what the DIC readout it for AVG MPG. I’m very curious.

So E85 avg mpg : 20.6 for this week. Not great but honestly where I am at gas is $4.20. E85 is $3.18 at the local Mobil. Also very little of this is highway.

That’s actually pretty good if it’s city driving. At that price, I’d take that any day. Congrats!
