My dad is a retired GM employee so I qualify for GMS pricing and documentation fees. Under the program, they have language about the documentation fees that a dealer can charge. Details found here, top of page 3 https://www.gmfamilyfirst.com/content/pdf/emp/GM-Rules-VPP.pdf
The exact language is
Documentation Fees
Dealers will be permitted to assess a maximum of $75 in documentation fees, except when:
• A documentation fee is specified under state law; and
• The dealership charges all customers the same documentation fee.In my state, there is NO requirement that a dealer HAS to charge a fee but CAN if they want, up to $500. I read that GMS document as, they can charge a max of $75 UNLESS the state REQUIRES a higher fee AND they charge that same amount to all customers.
My local dealer disagrees, their “controller” disagrees. I called the GMS number and the girl that answered hesitated but sided with them as well saying since they “can” they can do what they want. I just don’t think she could get their head around the fact that the state allows a fee but doesn’t require it. I countered with, what is the point of a $75 dollar maximum then? When would that ever be a useful maximum or why even have that part of the language in it? Otherwise, the second part is all that would matter. I think they’re both thinking “is specified under state law” as “can” rather than “required”
Anyone have experience in this arena?

klutch14u, I recently ran across this same situation and am likely just as upset about this blatant violation as you are. Did you get any resolution here?
