ParticipantHello! I’m a proud owner of 2012 1LT 4cyl AWD Equinox for about a month now; however, now that I have more time to go thru the manual and “play” with the electronics, I’m a little confused. Hopefully you can clarify for me!
I’ve been able to pair my smartphone with the hands free bluetooth feature without a problem, but I’m unable to upload contacts (I have a blackberry that prompts for “adding contacts” when it is plugged in via the USB port), and my ipod is not recognized when plugged in via the USB as well (which I’m aware that not all ipods will be recognized as stated in the manual).
When it comes to the other features of MyLink, I’m getting mixed information. For example, I want to use my pandora radio via my smartphone, but the only way I’ve been able to run that is if I use an auxillary cable. I’ve called customer service, and they told me MyLink was an upgrade option, but on the manufactuer websites its appearing as if its a standard, or its not listed as “MyLink” at all.
I’m more or less wondering how to obtain the MyLink feature thats described on Chevy’s website that advertises the 2012 Equinox and Volt as being the models with this new feature (and an explanation as to why my 2012 doesn’t have this). Thanks for your time and help! The tech-ee in me appreciates it!

KeymasterHey Lauren — no problem; welcome and congrats on the new Equinox!
What kind (version) of Blackberry and iPod do you have? I know that MyLink only supports the newer Smartphones while supporting pretty much all “recent” iPods.
Also, if you have the 7″ color touchscreen in your ‘Nox, then you’ve got MyLink — don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. 😀 There seems to be some kind of misinformation (or maybe miscommunication about MyLink at the moment since it’s just so new.
Anyway, let’s start with that and see where we get. I have access to many devices and will test them out myself in a new Equinox soon!

ParticipantI’ve heard several stories about Blackberry users having trouble with MyLink, but that’s mainly because they were using prehistoric Blackberries. My Storm works fine with my 2012 Camaro (via USB), but I haven’t tried it with a 2012 yet. And my Camaro doesn’t have MyLink.
@alex See what you can find out when you play around with the system — my wife is itching for an Equinox, and I have a feeling we’ll go for the 2012 1LT or 2LT. But unlike me, she has an iPhone. And yes, she makes fun of me for using a Blackberry. But that’s okay, I’m the one drivin the Camaro. Haha. -

ParticipantFor what it’s worth, on a youtube demo video on the new Equinox Stereo as done by a dealer. http://youtu.be/EdVRc3_a-xA I asked the dealer this same question in regards to Pandora. According to him, it’s a feature that won’t be added until later and starting in the 2013 Malibu. I know with Ford’s SYNC system, they release updates/patches that you can download to a USB drive and upload to your car. Obviously not comparing the same tech here, but my nerd self is curious if this could be a possibility with MyLink?

ParticipantThanks for the clarification on the “MyLink”! As for my blackberry its newer (bold 9780), and I’ve tried two ipods (mine is older, so I tried one that is 1 to 2yrs old). I’ve tried different USB cords as well. So, as for troubleshooting, I think I’ve come to the point where I need to go to the service center to check the actual USB port, unless you have any other suggestions?

ParticipantI am doing am overnight test on a 2012 Equinox, and with my iPhone 4 with Pandora, I do not see the Pandora or Stitcher apps on the screen at all. Going nuts trying to figure out if this is going to be an upgrade or what??? There is no streaming via Bluetooth at all, but even with iPhone cable plugged in, I only get access to iPod functionality. I connected this phone to the Ford Edge and streamed any iPhone app beautifully. Hope they issue software updates for GM vehicles on this!

KeymasterHi Dennis — and welcome to the GM Authority forum!
It seems that the Pandora integration isn’t available right now but will come via a future software update. We’re confirming this with GM officials right now and will most likely find out for sure on Monday.
That said, Bluetooth streaming should work just fine for your content stored on your iPhone (in the iPod or Music apps). You can also stream Pandora via Bluetooth (but not control it with your voice, which is what the update to MyLink will bring). To stream Pandora with Bluetooth, you’ll need to start playing music from the Pandora app and then there should be a new button once your phone is paired with the Equinox; this button will give you a choice between the output — your phone (speaker) or MyLink. Select MyLink and you should be good to go.

ParticipantSorry Alex,
Blue tooth streaming for Pandora does not work on my iPhone 4. I paired it successfully for hands free phone calls and contact lists on the screen. But Pandora only plays via the USB source in a nonsensical way, i.e the iPod app automatically comes up playing on USB/iPod source selection and one needs to lay the Pandora app to force an override of the iPod playlist. The Pandora internet radio songs then play on the speakers, but the nav screen show iPod in Pause mode just like iPhone does when it overrides a playlist song for an incoming phone call.
This is not the My Link service and nav screen shots featuring Pandora I saw advertised. I upgraded my Pandora app on the iPhone today. For those of us with 2012 Equinoxes manufactured in October where and how does one get the My link software upgrade. From the dealer?

Participanthttps://www.myconnectedradio.com/web/chevrolet is a special mylink website with FAQs, instruction manuals and contact information. Also included are USB downloads for upgrading the mylink radio’s software to most recent versions to fix problems like those discussed here. The latter requires downloading the MyLink update to a computer and an inexpensive USB flash drive and then plugging the flash drive into the USB port in the car’s console. Touch screen buttons to navigate the updating of radio software via USB can be found on the car radio’s navigation screen.

Participant@dwerling, dennisrice, alex
Were you able to successfully install a software update to the radio to enable mylink functionality? In talking with my dealer it seems that the radio being installed in the current 2012 equinoxes do not have mylink functionality. There apparently are three radios, colortouch, colortouch nav, and the unreleased mylink radio (early 2012 select equinox models). I will note that this goes against all the advertising and documentation on the chevrolet website and press releases saying it is available on 2012 equinox models with no qualifiers or exceptions listed.
However if you were able to update the radio via that website to enable bluetooth audio streaming (not just phone, but A2DP protocol streaming) without usb plugged in, and also getting the pandora and skitched apps to appear, then the colortouch radio may be upgradeable to have mylink. Right now I don’t think you are using the “MyLink” capabilites with all the advertised capabilities. Just try unplugging the usb and then streaming audio over bluetooth. It should, but I betcha it won’t work, unfortunately 😉 GM needs to clear this up and fast!!!!!

Participantrajamahal,
Exactly, I was getting the same three radios bit from the Chevy website service support at their 800 number. But on my build order for the 2012, which I have, there is no option for a special my link radio, only Nav or standard. Chevy may be backing into an extra, priced option because they were not ready to deliver on day one, but a lot of folks were told this was a standard for 2012 when we ordered.Hopefully this is a software and not a radio problem– a problem of vaporware or software not delivered rather then some special chip in a new radio. If it is software , as I hope, then I will post when I gan get successfully registered on the myconnectedradio.com website and the mylink software updates uploaded– even the mylink site has the bugs of site newly delivered.

Participantdwerling,
That build order may be paydirt in terms of getting Chevrolet to support current 2012 Equinox owners who were mislead by their advertising. The window stickers are also vague enough that a buyer could be confused. It merely says 7″ color touch radio and bluetooth for phone. Both of those could refer to a radio with or without the MyLink functionality because the radios use exactly the same user interface (7″, color touch screen, bluetooth functionality)Could you post the build order (blacking out any of your personal information of course) for all of us to look at? Thanks!
Not good Chevy, not good!

Keymaster@rajamahal @dwerling This is odd. I’ve put in a question to GM to see what’s going on. Last I heard, however, is that MyLink is indeed shipping on the 2012 Equinox.

KeymasterOk guys — just heard back from GM — officially:
“I don’t believe they start shipping until next Month. So, if people ordered Equinoxes this fall, they would not be getting MyLink just yet.”
I’ve asked whether owners of 2012 Equinoxes without MyLink will be getting a software update but have not heard back yet.

ParticipantYes, please do get back to us on the second point there. I would happily “re-purchase” (long story) a 2012 equinox 1LT now if there is a guaranteed software upgrade to have the entire MyLink functionality. Otherwise it looks like I’m waiting… I would bet that Chevy is going to be as tight lipped about this as possible, especially if there is no way to upgrade. It would be the honest decision, but then they might have to discount existing models. I mean right now bluetooth streaming doesn’t even work (it did on the old style non-touchscreen radio…what BS) 😉

ParticipantI wish I had saw this before taking delivery of my car. The salesman told me the upgrade will be an easy to get streaming and Pandora going. Now I am getting told I will either have to pay money to fix Chevrolet’s mistake or accept I got screwed, no other recourse.

ParticipantGM has screwed up the MyLink launch to a faretheewell. ALL of the literature indicated that the 2012 Equinox that I ordered in July and took delivery on in August would include MyLink. ParticipantWell, this is all very disappointing for sure. Technically, I do not understand this one at all, this seems much like a software thing. I had hoped for updates for Pandora as well as additional apps coming our eventually. I will hold out hope that these reports will be corrected to say it is indeed a software update one day! I personally do not understand the hardware update need.
All that being said, I am really enjoying my car and my radio. I was concerned at first that Bluetooth streaming of Pandora, NAV apps, etc. from my iPhone would not be there, but am actually not too concerned about it right now. I plug my iPhone 4s into the USB port as soon as I get in the car, select USB as the source, and it plays anything from my iPhone I want that way (including voice over music for Nav directions from any navigation app). I can also use the new Siri assistant voice from Apple, but I do have to press the phone button to do it (no big deal at all). For example, I press the button on the phone, say “Text Contact Name”, and it prompts me for what I want to say, right through the car mic and speakers. Or I push the button, say, “When is my next appointment”, and my phone tells me. I can skip songs in Pandora from the steering wheel as well, but do not get any thumbs up / down type controls. All the Pandora album art also shows up on the touch screen. This is why I say it seems like just a software update. The radio IS talking to Pandora already. I can start Pandora, see album art and metadata on the color screen, then have my NAV app showing on the iPhone screen. It’s excellent.
I got an inexpensive universal “grabber” mount for my iPhone (@$15), routed the USB cable through the center console, and it looks really awesome sitting just in front of the CD slot. I put one of those circle disks that suction mounts adhere to on the underside of the center console hole, and a standard flexible extended arm from that and it now looks like a factory option. I can also put my Garmin GPS in that suction mount as well if I desire.
Want to know the biggest reason I am not that disappointed in not having Bluetooth streaming? BATTERY life. By plugging my iPhone into the USB port, I am also getting my battery charged, which is a HUGE plus for me. I drive a lot, so enjoy knowing I am doing all that while not using battery.
I have played with this radio for hours, and will be glad to try things people request, but note that I am an iPhone user only. I have paired my wife’s Samsung phone via Bluetooth successfully as well as my iPad.
There are of course a number of advantages of full smartphone integration I would love to have (like full voice access to contact list, or full Pandora control), but for now, I am okay with what I have. It is a shame they have that update software from USB option in the radio config menu and nothing to update! Here’s hoping they manage to upgrade us later…..

Participantactually dennis, on my 12 equinox (7 in screen mylink or whatever this is) thru bluetooth, if set right, contacts show up on the system radio. had to fiddle around to find it but they’re there.
also, by pressing the phone button on the wheel and saying bluetooth (saved and synched ovcourse) then voice you can do alot of siri stuff without ever touching your phone. just discovered it. try it! -

ParticipantYes, I know how to use menus to browse my iPhone contacts, but would like to be able to use voice commands to access contacts. Driving and menu surfing is not very safw to say the least. Iphone Siri works, but I have had issues using Siri unless I press the button on the phone itself.
True smartphone navigation goes well beyond Bluetooth commands. The best example I have seen is the Ford Edge. There are so many nice things you can do with that level of integration.

Keymaster@DennisRice You’re absolutely right, the Edge and SYNC/MyFord Touch is currently the premier infotainment system in the world that’s capable of using voice commands. MyLink will do much of what SYNC/MyFord Touch does, but a bit better (in my opinion). Unfortunately, the 2012 Equinoxes sold so far don’t have it — as you know 🙁
Here is a list of all the MyLink voice commands that we could find:
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/12/here-are-the-chevy-mylink-voice-commands-youll-ever-need/I would recommend you join up with some of the folks participating in the discussion at the link below. They, too, were told that their 2012 Equinoxes will be equipped with MyLink (or at least be software upgradeable to MyLink):
http://gmauthority.com/blog/2011/11/2012-chevy-equinox-not-shipping-with-mylink-infotainment-system-not-be-upgradeable/Some are planning to write to GM to see what can be done on a case-by-case basis for them.
Using Siri through the Bluetooth pass-through is nice, but still doesn’t help the fact that Chevy’s own marketing materials stated a Fall 2011 availability of MyLink.

ParticipantI’m glad I found this thread. I just registered and downloaded the update. Hopefully I I will be able to stream Pandora now on my 2012 Equinox.
@DennisRice, What app do you use for Navigation that syncs through the radio? My Onstar Turn by Turn is ending in March and I would like an alternative. Although I will miss the Onstar Autostart too. I find it more reliable than the key fab. Thanks!

Keymaster@LibraGirlDC Hey Donna — welcome to GM Authority!
Unfortunately, I think you will find that the update you downloaded won’t enable Pandora the way you had hoped, as MyLink isn’t shipping on Equinoxes yet. 🙁
Also, in my experience, I haven’t been able to find a better navigation alternative to OnStar. I’ve tried out TomTom on the iPhone and the Maps/Navigation app on Android devices — while those are nice, nothing beats the convenience of OnStar (dial up a person while driving or sending directions straight to the vehicle via Google Maps from a computer) or its responsiveness. Hope that helps!

Participant@LibraGirlDC — I use the MotionX Drive 99 cent app on my iPhone. It works really well. What update did you download? Was it from “MyConnectedRadio”? Did you see any differences when installed?
@Alex — I like the Onstar nav capability, but it does not give me onscreen maps (only turn maps), can’t do searches directly in app on the fly, that kinda thing. Its just not as complete a full navigation experience like MotionX. For 9.99 a year you can also get voice guidance, which is a good deal.@all — I have grown used to streaming Pandora via the USB port and have no complaints there. I can easily touch phone to do commands, still skip songs from steering wheel, etc., and I like plugging in since it keeps my phone charged. Also, pretty much any audio app on my iPhone will play fine through the cable, which is a plus. It will be interesting to see what updates if any they do to this radio though.

Participant@Alex, Sadly, the download from MyConnectedRadio didn’t do anything. I kept the WM as they ofered it to me for $5 a month but would ditch it if I could make the Pandora work.
@DennisRice, Thanks! I’m going to try that App out. I recently moved from DC to the Maryland burbs and still don’t know where I’m going half the time. I just realized it will use a lot of my data though and AT&T was no longer offering unlimited data when I got the iphone. Are you abe to get the MotionX maps to show up on your screen? I’m fine with the arrows only that Onstar puts on my screen. I like that it tells me how many yards/miles until my next turn.I soooooooo want to keep the Onstar Directions & Connections Plan. I love the Navigation & the AutoStart on my IPhone App. As a woman who knows nothing about car mechanics, I also love that it will tell me when things are wrong and send help if I need it. I just have a hard time justifying the $30/mo for it. They just sent me an offer for $25/mo. Has anyone gotten them any lower? I would have been willing to pay for Navigation as an Option but it wasn’t available for my 1LT.

Participant@alex, all
Pls correct me if I’m wrong…
What I’m gathering from all I’ve been reading is that on the 2012 Nox (1LT and above) there is a radio version called an Infotainment system and a forthcoming Mylink system. Also, the current Infotainment system, due to hardware differences, is not projected to be software upgradable to Mylink.
If that’s true, well that stinks, but so be it.
That said, do you know of GM’s future plans for the Infotainment system? Obviously, it’s software is upgradable to some degree, so might we get updates that enable newer capabilities, though not quite the caliber of the projected Mylink?
I’d certainly like to see Bluetooth streaming available at a minimum, and I’d certainly like them to fix the fact that my iPod album tracks appear in alphabetical order and not track order.
Thoughts?

ParticipantI want to go on record as being very disappointed about no mylink in my Equinox as well. I had the dealer order my 2012 LTZ straight from tthe factory and I picked it up in mid March. Still no mylink is present and the dealer seemed to be confused about when it would be available also. Seems to me that GM needs to do something for those of us who bought a car expecting it to have mylink and finding out that it does not and will not be upgradable. I hear when mylink is available it is now going to be an option and cost more. I would be fine paying more if that was even an option but now I am stuck with the infotainment system. GM should do a recall and any Volt or Equinox that did not get the mylink system should have one installed in place of the infotainment system at the cost of GM. This is my first GM car and possibly my last if something is not done about the false advertising.

On a sidenote, the chevy site states that mylink isn’t available with navigation yet there was just a news article about the new Gogolink app only being available on the Spark and Sonic:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31347_7-57406763-270/chevy-adds-gogolink-navigation-to-list-of-mylink-apps/So, if you can’t have navigation and there is no app, is there no option for mylink with indash navigation??

ParticipantActually I just noticed on the Chevy “Build Your Own” you can now select Chevy mylink for $100. Not sure when the order will be filled however.

Keymaster@rwingace @Vic1212 That’s correct — MyLink can’t be combined with navigation. Only the color touch radio can — which doesn’t include Nav.
The stair-step options are as follows:
– Color Touch Radio (base)
– Color Touch Radio (with Navigation)
– Chevrolet MyLink Radio (no navigation)Obviously, the inability to have MyLink and navigation is a disadvantage. While we haven’t heard anything to confirm or deny this, I think it’s safe to assume that GM/Chevy are working on making the combination available.

ParticipantI’ve played around with the NEW ’13 Malibu MyLink and it is different form the standard color touch radio in the Equinox. You do not need the navigation feature of the color touch radio, just port and use your own navigation from your smartphone. I have navigon on my iPad and iPhone and I love the features it provides and you do not have to worry about an aging obsolete nav unit in the years to come.

ParticipantOk, then I am wondering if someone can give me guidance on which option should I get? MyLink or Navigation?
What are some pros and cons of each, what would I be missing out on either way?
For some background information, I have a Droid X and I love using pandora and google navigation. I like the idea of controlling pandora from the dash, but it would also be nice to have indash navigation. However, I worry the navigation won’t be as good as google maps and would be tougher for updates.
Does anyone have MyLink and use their phone for navigation? Is there a place to rest your phone while still in view or do you use a car mount?
Thanks,
Andrew -

ParticipantThe MyLink is just the next step up with being able to use your smartphone as part of your everyday use, we have not purchased a new Equinox due to the MyLink not being available yet in the 4 cyl

ParticipantThe Navigation will be displayed on the screen of the MyLink head unit, and you can hide your phone in the center console while using the dash/steering wheel controls and the console has a convenient usb cord cut out to plug in your phone all inside the center console.

ParticipantThe voice instruction from my navigon is broadcast but I stand corrected on the display being ported to the screen. I have not figured it out yet, will call chevy (mylink) the next chance I get. Sorry for the misinformation.

ParticipantI was wondering if anybody could help me. I just purchased a 2012 Chevy equinox yesterday with mylink. I have an iPhone and I was wondering if anybody could walk me through the steps as to how I can use my gps on my iPhone and see it on the my link screen? Thank you

ParticipantI’m using just the standard one that comes with all the iPhones. The dealer said that I would be able to use it and see it on the my link screen but so far all I can do is play music from the phone and sync my contacts list. I’m not sure if your familiar with this but the dealer tried to tell me that instead of buying the navigation system with the car, just get the standard Chevy mylink and I would be able to pull up the nav on my phone just like I can for my contacts and music.

ParticipantThat would be a great idea to be able to use the iphone app on the 7″ touchscreen as a nav system, Could Onstar make this available through the “infolink” system that is associated with the early 2012 Eqinox?

Keymaster@webbd1 Oh I see. As far as I know, that’s not possible. Not in the Equinox (with or without MyLink), or in any other vehicle — for that matter.
The goal of those systems is to bring control of your device (smartphone, tablet, etc.) into the hands-free realm of the vehicle (steering wheel, voice, etc.). So while projecting the user interface to the onboard screen might be cool, I don’t think it would be very safe or user friendly — since the screen on your iPhone is significantly more advanced than those found in cars today.

ParticipantI’m very disappointed that GM has decided to not even make my pre MyLink radio even upgradable. Am I correct – there have been no upgrades issued on the early Equinox radio, correct?

ParticipantDoes everyone know that there has been a class action lawsuit filed against GM for the false advertising about Mylink availability on the 2012 Equinox.
They should just fix it for those of us that bought our cars thinking it was suppose to have it. I bought a 2LT version loaded and was told it was coming with a update. I purchased it in Feb. of this year. Please fix it Chev. -

ParticipantI purchased a 2012 Equinox in September, and I have been trying to use the “My Chevrolet” app on my Iphone. I have not been able to get my profile set up, Preferred dealer set-up, I live in Northern Canada, we only have one dealer. The options are
1. use current location
2. search by postal code
3. search by dealer name
I have tried all 3, several times and the error response I keep getting is “Invalid Data Input.”
I went to my dealership and they said it must be privacy settings on my phone, I went to Bell and they said there was nothing in my privacy settings that would not allow this app to work.
Please help!! -

ParticipantI just found out about this as well. I have a 2012 Equinox with the 7″ touchscreen, but found out just the other day it’s in fact NOT MyLink when I tried to go to the dealer to have the software updated.
I purchased in Aug 2011, and at the time the salesman told me the car had MyLink. When I asked why the Pandora app was missing, he told me the radio was so new that a software update would be coming later that would add all of those features. I’ve been checking every 3 months or so thinking eventually the update would come out on the owner’s website, but nothing ever came. That’s when I started digging around and found this thread.
This is kind of ridiculous if you ask me. I’ve been corresponding with someone at GM customer service, and so far I haven’t gotten very far, even after showing him the article about the class action lawsuit. Makes me think GM will just brush this off as nothing while we all got basically screwed out of the MyLink system. -

Participanthi are there any new updates? I was very upset when I found out I couldn’t access the mylink features. I’m having some of the same issues that have been mentioned above but I have a Samsung galaxy 3. I can’t stream any music via Bluetooth, and ive tried to update the radio software but it’s asking for a software CD… I bought my 2012 equinox brand new and there was no cd. connecting my phone with the usb cable doesn’t even work.

Keymaster@Melissa_at_Labrador I’d be glad to help. But could you please start a new thread about this, since this thread is specific to Chevrolet MyLink. Thanks!

ParticipantGosh this whole thing is confusing. I bought a certified 2012 Equinox LTZ on Saturday, and was told it has mylink. For all I know, it might, but I can’t figure it out. There aren’t apps on the touch screen for pandora or navigation, and I can’t figure out how to make it use the nav from my iPhone (which the dealer said it could do). How do I figure out if I have mylink, and if it’s the latest software version?
