I was cleared to drive after a crash on July 19th that totaled my three-weeks-old 2016 used Forester. My mom wants us to use Bob Johnson in Rochester, and as of right now, they don’t have a Forester or Outback with good value, so we’re looking at Equinoxes and Terrains. From what I know- my first truck was a Sierrado, highly problematic, I hope mostly due to the previous owners- GMC and Chevy are identical. The only difference I can find on the terrain is squarer roof bars, ‘aggressive’ style on fenders and headlights to make it look more ‘macho’. I think they both have good safety ratings, something I didn’t pay attention to until I survived getting T-boned by a 55mph F150 due to Subaru engineering. They seem to get alright gas mileage, 18-25.

Just bought one for my wife. IMHO, I find the GMC to be a bit nicer (more elegant) than the Chevy models at the same price range. You have to pay more for niceness in the Chevy.
That said, your reference to an eight foot board…Surf board or an eight foot sheet of plywood.
The surf board would probably fit, (uncomfortably), but the plywood would be out of the question for the 2020 model. It is a bit trimmed-down.
However, both could be strapped to the roof and carried that way. -
