ParticipantNot sure if anyone has brought this subject up, but I wonder if the 7 speed manual found in the new ‘vette would fit the ATS. It certainly would be interesting paired with the Turbo 4 or maybe on the ATS-V?

KeymasterGood question, @BY2002. I think the move to a 7-speed manual is a natural progression, especially for the ATS. It would most definitely improve the driving acceleration and fuel economy, therefore resulting in a better overall ownership/driving experience… so the benefit of moving to a 7-speed is most definitely real.
Now, I don’t have any inside info as of this writing, but I think we should expect some changes for the ATS for the 2014 model year; perhaps a 7-speed stick will be among those changes.
I’m basing this on the fact that (as you guys already know) Corvette C7 production commences in the third quarter of 2013; as such, the TREMEC TR6070 for the Vette will go into production around that timeframe. And it just so happens that GM makes model year refreshes during the summer/fall timeframe… so the timing seems to line up for the ATS to get the 7-speed when the C7 is launched.
Personally, I’d love to drive the 2.0T with a seven-speed… would love to!

KeymasterI don’t know for sure one way or the other, but I don’t see a reason why it wouldn’t… it might not be the exact same transmission, I’m sure some adaptations could be made if there are fitting issues.

ParticipantI have to ask who would buy a non-hi-perf Cadillac with a manual trans much less a 7-sp.? Not many I would hazard a guess.
I recall when I purchased a new ’05 CTS they had one (not V) with a 6-sp trans. That car sat for nearly 2 yrs on the dealers lot before they finally got rid of it.
Years ago (2002) while at the Corvette Museum there was some Chevy big shots there for the F-Body celebration (end of production of the Camaro/Firebird). In a Q&A session with the Chevy and Pontiac program managers they mentioned that options that did not meet 5% of models production total were a loss for GM and would be cancelled.

ParticipantI’ve owned a 2005 CTS (non V) with 6 speed manual which I loved and didn’t have trouble selling it when time came.

Keymaster@Z15 Like @Lex, I would buy a CTS (or ATS) with a stick. Given that Caddy is now a performance brand ala BMW, this is more or less a prerequisite… especially in Europe. Granted, the take rate for manuals is significantly lower than for automatics/automated manuals (like DSGs), but it makes sense to offer it in a high-margin luxury vehicle like a Cadillac.

KeymasterNope, link was fine. Thank you!
Personally, all I want is for GM to begin developing some dual-clutch automated-manual gearboxes. Having experienced a few recently, they overshadow the stick… but nothing beats the “fun nature” of a manual, so I’m hoping for GM to offer both in its performance vehicles: a stick (standard), and a dual-clutch auto (optional).
