ParticipantI took delivery of a 2016 Sierra Denali (5.3 V8, 8-Spd, 3.42) in November and had to take it into the dealer a week later for a transmission issue (coming to a stop the truck would shudder as though the transmission was shifting hard into first gear or as though the engine was about to stall). 3 weeks after taking it into the shop, GMC engineers determined that there was a torque converter problem that was staying engaged too long causing the engine to nearly stalling out when coming to a stop. They okay’d replacing the entire transmission for a new one. I finally got the truck back (a MONTH after first taking it into the shop – and yes, the truck spent 30 days of its first 39 days of ownership in the hands of my dealer) and figured that would be the last of my problems. Since then, I’ve noticed that when yielding – or in traffic/congestion – when I’m slowing down almost to a stop (around 5 mph or lower), then stepping on the accelerator, there will be a long (1 to 2 seconds) delay between me stepping on the accelerator to move and the truck shifting into first and beginning to accelerate. I took it to the dealer again, and they claimed the delay and even “hard” little shifts are normal for this transmission because it is “adaptive” and constantly learning… What? I at first bought it (they are the pros), but I’m beginning to hate not having the confidence of pulling out of a driveway, side street, etc. and being able to immediately get the power and acceleration I need to get out of the way (or better yet to get on my way). Is anyone else here having similar issues with their 1500’s with the new GM 8-spd?

ParticipantFirst post. Hate to see you are having problems. Thought I might be the only one after hearing what service department is telling me. I just bought a 2016 Silverado LTZ with an eight speed and it shifts horrible. Love the truck but not fun to drive while taking off and stopping. Truck has 1400 miles on it because according to service department I have to get my truck to learn my driving habits. I am either a bad driver or have a truck with a learning disability. When truck sits over night or going home from work it always jerks a couple times taking off. Never fails. When I first bought, every time I would stop it would do something that felt like it was still shifting down when I should be stopped and actually feel like a double stop or surge forward. May sound crazy but really is the only way I can explain. There has been a couple times when I pulled into a parking spot to where it felt like I hit a curb because of the way it would stop. I have never experienced anything like this with any vehicle I have ever had. Seems like the computer is not in sync with the transmission at all. I will make turns and vehicle don’t seem to downshift when it should. I truly feel like I am driving a manual shift truck without using clutch. Love the truck and hope enough people speak up so this problem can be fixed. According to my service department vehicle runs as it should. If this is the case I wish I would have kept my perfect running 2013 Ford F-150 4×4.

Participant2015 Denali 6.2 8 spd @ 50,000 miles and dealer has had it 1.5 months. hard shifts, downshift too soon, shutter at freeway speeds like running over rumble strips and I could go on but what is the point. Gm sold me a crappy bill of goods! Dealer told me at the first complaint at the 1st oil change that the transmission shifted hard and sounded like it has slack in it because it was learning my driving habits (what a load of crap but I believed him)! Next time I complained I was told clanking was because of the 4 speed and all the natural slack in the transfer case via the chain( again, what a load of steaming crap, I just put 350,000 mi. on a 2008 4 wheel dr so I know BS when I hear it)! I went today and talked personally with the mechanic who has had my pickup for the last month and half and told him he would make me a bigger enemy if he lied to me than to just tell me the truth. He came clean ( I think) ans said torque converter was on back order because the converters were giving them LOTS of problems so they switched suppliers and the new converters should be in any day. Probably different company name but same company owned by the same chinaman. Luckily my truck is one of the last ones covered by the 100,000 warranty. When and if I get this truck back, everytime the transmission even so much as hiccups it will be back on their front porch. They will be sick of me but they are giving me a new truck to drive and I have to turn it back in when I get 3,500 miles on it and trade for a new one! I’ve had three so far. Any one else have this problem? According to mechanic if you don’t, you will! 20014/20015 and first 2016

ParticipantI have a 2016 1500 high country with 6.2 and 8 speed. Just hit 22k miles. Between 1000-1500 RPM the truck feels like I’m driving on the wake up bumps off the highway. I’m also experiencing alot of snap crackle pop during quick excelleration.

ParticipantThis problem with adaptive driving in new transmissions is not new , I have a 09 Toyota that does same thing .had to dealer couple times to reprogram tranny but it still hesitates on take off , lane changes , pulling out to pass . You step on it and it hesitates just like the old carb. cars use to do when the power valve was wore out . Sad state of affairs in today’s technology

ParticipantI have a 2017 silverado ltz with 6.2/8-speed and I’m experiencing the same issues as 4x4sierra and Jripton617 trucks. This is ridiculous they obviously didn’t fix the issue between 16 and 17. Paid 60k for a truck that has a shudder between 35-55mph, it almost feels like the engine and trans are out of sync… Did the converter fix the issue?

ParticipantYes. Just got a new torque converter installed and the problem is gone.
