ParticipantHey. My temperature sensor will work for a couple of weeks and then will no longer read the engine temp. Result is fan running after motor is switched off.
I have replaced the sensor and the connection.
Still stops working after about 2 weeks.
The fix is to disconnect power and then reconnect. Fixes it every time but only for a while.
What could cause this? Thanks. -

ParticipantBad Thermostat is generally the cause

ParticipantThe thermostat is a mechanical part. The truck is cooling but the computer doesn’t seem to know it.
There seems to be no signal. The gauge is pegged at the lowest temp. The needle doesn’t move. Just a quick disconnect and reconnect of the battery fixes it. -

Participantyep for a year I had the very same issue…
Yep it was the thermostat. The dealer charged me tons of money..
I told them it was the thermostat and they to said no..
I did exactly the same thing you did to reset it.
The temp was on the low threshold and the computer turns off the gage after it times out to incorrect temp…long fight ! Most dealerships just milk you along! -

ParticipantWell… I’ve replaced the connector and the temp sensor. So thermostat the last part of that system. And doesn’t cost too much. I’ll go ahead and swap it out. Thanks !

ParticipantAny luck with this issue? I have a 2014 Silverado 5.3 with the exact same problem. Changed the temp sensor and problem went away so I thought I was good. A month or so later driving down the road and the gauge shows 160 with no movement at all. A few days later it will start working on its own for a month or so. This problem has been sporadic, but GM dealer says nothing they can do with no check engine light. Thinking about changing thermostat but you would think if it was thermostat, the gauge would have some kind of movement still. Thanks.
