I’m looking at a black 2012 Chevrolet Malibu with 116,000 miles. I generally avoid these cars since I usually find them with the ECOTEC 2.4L I4 which have plastic timing chain guides that are known for breaking and potentially destroying the valves and other engine components. I would like to know what others think about the 3.6L V6 LY7 engine that is in this particular Malibu I am looking at. I’ve also heard of timing issues with these. However, it sounds like those issues are caused by the people not checking the engine oil when it gets low in between oil changes. Is this true? Does a low oil level cause the timing issues? Has this been fixed since these engines came out?
