Well, I finally experienced the dreaded instrument cluster gauge failures – Speedo registers 90mph all the time and voltmeter stays at 9volts. I checked with local dealer to see who repairs their gauge clusters – answer was they don’t repair, they only replace them. Replacemnt cost is $450 + labor to R&R; I was shocked. Why are these gauge clusters just throw-aways? I purchased 7 replacement stepper motors online for <$30 and had the gauge cluster out, repaired (replaced 6 stepper motors) and reinstalled in less than 1 hour. That amounts to approximately $130 total – parts and labor at $100/hr. Have GM techs really lost the skill to perform simple solder repairs, or is it big GM saying we will not do these type of repairs – very disappointing.

@gpcorcor I think it’s a matter of warrantying the repair. They can warranty the replacement cluster just fine, but not so much the solder repairs.
that kind of repair I wouldn’t even give it to the dealer to repair it
