Digirolad,
Gundog just posted a pretty good summary of the process. According to him the order # is not generated until GM is ready to accept the order. Things may have changed since I placed my order, over a year ago. All I can tell you is that I got an order #, from my dealer, right after placing the order. My order remained at event code 1100 for many months and never got accepted for a build date due to lack of allocation and constraints on available parts. I believe it was Sept. of 22 I was told that due to to constraints my truck would not be built in 22 and I had to reorder for a 23 if I still wanted the truck, so I did. About a month later is when my dealer called about another truck that was ordered and abandoned by the customer so I ended up buying that one and canceling the order that never got built.
Bottom line is there is nothing you or anyone can do to expedite the process.
It all comes down to: Your dealer must have allocation and GM must have all the parts, in stock, for your particular build, (no constraints) before it gets assigned a build date.
Your customer experience depends a lot on how much information your dealer is willing to divulge. From what I have read most dealers are reluctant to talk about allocation because if they told you up front that they took your order without having allocation and where you are in the line of customers waiting for allocation, they wouldn’t sell as many cars.
