I had an order # soon after the order was placed. Their is an order # generated when the order is placed. Your dealer may not want to give it to you because GM was so swamped last year from all the people emailing GM for tracking info while waiting many months for their vehicles. He may be pissed at you since he didn’t get your vehicle in trade. You made the right decision to sell it yourself.

There is also the subject of allocation. Your dealer has to have allocation for your particular model before GM will accept the build.
You should ask him if he has allocation and see what he says. Most likely he will blow you off and give some sort of BS story as dealers do like to talk about allocation like it is some dirty little secret. The larger the dealer the more likely he will will have allocation.

He is correct that although the order is placed you don’t really have an order until GM accepts the build and assigns a build date and then will assign production status codes as to what stage the vehicle is in production.

GM has to have all the parts needed in stock before they will accept the order to build. I went through many months of waiting for my smaller dealer to get allocation and then parts shortages preventing GM from accepting the build and never got accepted. After trading my 21 2500 in on 12/23/21, for the 22, I had to buy another cheep truck to get around, while waiting for mine to be built.
I think in June of 22 I was informed that GM will not be building any more long bed trucks that year and if I wanted a long bed I had to place a new order for a 23 model and incur the price increase for the new model year. I reluctantly placed the order and began the process all over again. In July of 22 My dealer called and said he had a similar truck come in that another customer ordered almost a year ago and backed out of the deal. It was same configuration of truck only in a higher trim. I ordered a 2500 Custom crew cab long bed. It was an LT crew cab long bed loaded with more options than I wanted. He made me a great deal on it as he felt sorry for me for waiting for so long. So I took the deal and abandoned my order that never got built.

At least my sales man was honest and forthcoming throughout the process. From what I have read that is very rare.
To be fair all the brands went through the same problems and some even worse as many people bashed GM and decided to switch brands only to find that other brands were having just as many problems or even worse.

I do believe things have improved now and hopefully you won’t have as many problems. Good luck.
