I have not seen a problem with the 15 & 16s yet . Engines have had design changes to increase fuel economy by using lower resistance rings thinner oil, longer oil change intervals higher quality oil. GM has required Dexos 1 oil or full synthetic mobile 1 oil in all of it’s gas engines since 2011. in 2016 Dexos 1 has been improved to a full synthetic (Dexos 1 Gen II) Some of the problems with may have caused by lack of oil changes with poor quality oil, oil filters and not checking / maintaining oil level between oil changes.
Also note most people will likely have around 60,000 miles on their 5 year old car. The 15 still has 100 K mile powertrain warranty for someone who may drive a lot more than 60,000 in 5 years. You may also want to check the in service date (dealer can look it up with the VIN).
The 2018 all new equinox is out now out so the remaining 17s may be disconnected price soon.
