@mtnbiker1185 Yup, @CraigInIndy is correct — the order number is generated immediately upon the order being placed.
As for the wait time: it is normal in some cases, which is especially true if you are getting a specific configuration. But what I think is taking place in your situation is slightly different. But knowing whether you ordered yours with the new 6.6L Duramax turbo diesel (L5P) would help.
