We expect the 2028 GMC Sierra 1500 Light Duty will carry over with only a few changes compared to the 2027 model, which will be completely redesigned.

Expectations – Sierra HD
The 2028 Sierra HD range, which will continue to consist of the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD, is expected to introduce an all-new model, representing the first model year of the fifth generation Sierra Heavy Duty. Here’s what we expect from the next-gen Sierra HD:
- Powertrain:
- Next-gen / sixth-gen GM Small Block V8 high-displacement gasoline engine with improvements in performance and efficiency
- Next-gen GM Duramax turbo-diesel V8 engine with great levels of power
- Ten-speed automatic transmissions expected to carry over with minor improvements
- Design: all-new exterior design that will serve as an evolution of the one seen on the current model, but with design language changes seen on the 2027 Sierra 1500
- Cabin: updated interior with the newest infotainment system
- Architecture: more capable version of the heavy duty T1-2 platform, itself an updated version of the T1 platform that has underpinned the Sierra HD since the 2020 model year
- Improvements in payload and towing capabilities, along with new features for higher levels of comfort and convenience
Availability
We expect the 2028 Sierra 1500 to enter production in mid-2027 and the 2028 Sierra HD to enter production during the third quarter of 2027.
Production
We expect production of the 2028 Sierra range to continue taking place across three plants, two in the U.S. and one in Mexico.
