The GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept made its debut at the Overland Expo Mountain West 2021. At that time, GM Authority sources indicated that the concept is a precursor to then-upcoming 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X – a more capable Canyon AT4 model that will give the midsize GMC truck similar enhancements to those found on its corporate cousin, the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.
“The Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept truck was designed to balance functionality with aesthetics. When you’re overlanding, capability is an important factor, but doing it with premium style and comfort elevates the experience even further for customers who truly want zero compromises,” said John Owens, lead creative designer for the concept truck.
After its debut, GMC renamed the Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX concept to Canyon AT4 Concept.

Based on the GMC Canyon AT4 pickup truck, the concept was designed to showcase GMC’s vision for its growing lineup of premium and capable trucks and SUVs. The rugged-yet-premium pickup features a unique grille and headlamp finishes, distinct AT4 badges, and an exclusive leather-wrapped interior to create a sense of confident capability that doesn’t compromise style or comfort.

Name Change
After the debut of the GMC Canyon OVRLANDX concept, GMC renamed it to “Canyon AT4 Concept.” It’s not clear exactly when the name change took place.
“We revisited the name in part because we wanted to keep the focus on Canyon AT4 as a brand rather than create or put more equity into a new brand name,” GMC Communications Director, Chad Lyons, told GM Authority in a statement in November 2021. “As an example, you have seen with our new 2022 Sierra how we continue to double down into AT4 as a brand by growing and expanding it (via AT4X).”
In regard to the Sierra, Lyons is referring to the GMC Sierra AT4X that was launched as a more off-road capable version of the Sierra AT4, becoming GMC’s equivalent to the all-new Chevy Silverado ZR2.
It’s also worth noting that the AT4 brand is rapidly gaining steam, with over half of GMC AT4 buyers being new to the brand.
Production Model
The GMC Canyon AT4 OVRLANDX joined the GMC model lineup as the 2023 GMC Canyon AT4X.
