The Canyon is all-new for the 2015 model year, representing the second generation of the Canyon nameplate.
The first-generation GMC Canyon remained in production for eight years, from 2004 thru 2012. The 2015 Canyon marks the return of the Canyon nameplate after a two-year-long hiatus, with the model aiming to redefine the North American midsize pickup truck segment while “raising the bar for everything from horsepower and efficiency to quietness and refinement”, according to General Motors.
2015 Canyon at-a-glance:
- Segment-best horsepower: 200 horsepower (149 kW) from the standard 2.5L I4 LCV and 305 horsepower (229 kW) from the available 3.6L V6 LFX
- The segment’s best payload of at least 1,450 pounds (657 kg)
- The segment’s best maximum trailering rating (when properly equipped) of at least 6,700 pounds (3,039 kg)
- Even greater capability with a powerful and efficient Duramax 2.8L turbodiesel engine (coming in 2016)
- Platform mate to the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado
The 2015 Canyon features a commanding exterior presence that emulates the technology-infused design aesthetic introduced on the 2014 Sierra 1500 and 2015 Sierra HD models.
Bold front-end styling incorporates the segment’s only standard projector beam headlamps and GMC’s signature C-shaped LED daytime running lamps on all models.
The truck is offered in three body configurations:
- Extended cab with a six-foot bed
- Crew cab with a five-foot bed
- Crew cab with a six-foot bed
With the tailgate down, the six-foot bed allows eight-foot-long items to be hauled within the vehicle.
Contributing to the Canyon’s refinement are features such as triple-sealed doors inlaid in the body sides, like the 2014 Sierra. The doors provide improved aerodynamic performance and a quieter interior. To help keep overall mass down and improve the front-to-rear weight balance, the Canyon features an all-new hood made of aluminum. In addition, the Canyon features the segment’s only active aero grille shutters, which close at certain highway speeds to enhance efficiency through improved aerodynamics.
Additional exterior features include:
- Segment-first CornerStep rear bumper design, pioneered on the 2014 Sierra, is standard
- Available segment-first EZ Lift-and-Lower locking tailgate that uses an internal torsion bar to make raising the tailgate easier with one hand, and a damper for more-controlled lowering
- Standard two-tier loading that allows a platform to effectively split the bed into upper and lower sections, making it easier to haul, store and conceal items such as tools
- Thirteen reconfigurable and four stationary tie-down locations throughout the bed for use with available, removable cargo tie-down rings
- Standard bed rail and tailgate protectors
- Available factory-installed spray-in bed liner
- Range of 16-, 17- and 18-inch aluminum wheels
The Canyon also offers a diverse collection of work- and lifestyle-supporting accessories, including everything from a bed liner and innovative cargo management system to a custom tonneau cover, removable cargo rings, tool box and more.
The 2015 Canyon features a quiet and refined interior distinguished by premium materials.
Comfortable And Connected Cabin
The interior of the 2015 Canyon is designed to be comfortable, heavily-equipped, and well-connected. A bold, upright instrument panel with large instruments and a central driver information center is similar to that found in the Sierra. Meanwhile, a center console-mounted shifter is similar to those found in midsize cars and crossovers.
Notable features include:
- Sculpted headliner that enhances headroom
- Halo lighting on key controls for easier viewing
- Open area at the front of the center console for easier phone charging
- Sculpted door panels that make it easier to enter and exit the vehicle
- Upper-instrument panel storage bin (when not equipped with the uplevel audio system), and large glove box volume
- Standard center console with room to store a tablet
- Rear under-seat storage
The Canyon’s seats are equally designed for long-haul comfort and wear. They use dual-firmness foam for greater comfort on long drives and high-wear, stain-resistant cloth seating trim. A power-adjustable driver’s seat is standard, and heated leather seats are standard on SLT. The All-Terrain package adds exclusive color and trim details, including embossed seatbacks and unique contrast stitching.
Technologies and connectivity support owners’ daily and recreational lives, including a standard 4.2-inch-diagonal color driver information screen in the instrument cluster.
Also available are:
- Eight-inch-diagonal color touch screen and multiple USB ports
- OnStar 4G LTE with built-in Wi-Fi hotspot
- Next-generation OnStar and IntelliLink enhancements with gesture recognition and natural language voice recognition
- Siri Eyes Free Mode for iPhone users
- Teen Driver feature
- GMC AppShop (delayed)
- Navigation system
Teen Driver
Teen Driver is a new feature of IntelliLink that allows parents to set a radio volume limit, establish a speed warning set between 40 and 70 mph, and set a speed limiter. The configurable feature also automatically mutes the radio when the driver or front passenger safety belt is not fastened, while a “report card” records mileage, wide-open throttle events, ABS events, maximum speed and other data. The custom features are locked by a PIN, which is set by the parent.
OnStar 4G LTE With Wi-Fi Hotspot
Canyon’s customer-focused technologies include available OnStar 4G LTE connectivity with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.
Additionally, RemoteLink Key Fob Services allow owners to lock and unlock their vehicle, flash the lights and honk the horn, and — on equipped models — even remotely start the engine using the RemoteLink smartphone app. The service is free for five years. Additional OnStar services and data plans will be available with a paid subscription.
The Canyon (along with the 2015 Colorado) will be most powerful and efficient truck in the segment, enabling owners to haul and tow more while being fuel efficient. GM’s 2.5L Ecotec I4 LCV is standard, and the 3.6L V6 LFX is available. The two engines are based on award-winning engine families and tuned to deliver the low-rpm torque customers depend on for hauling and towing.
The 2.5L inline four is rated at 200 horsepower (149 kW) and 191 pound-feet of torque (259 Nm), with approximately 90 percent of the peak torque available from 2,000 rpm to 6,200 rpm. The 3.6L V6 is rated at 305 horsepower (229 kW) and 269 pound-feet of torque (365 Nm).
Both engines feature:
- Direct injection
- Variable valve timing
- Aluminum block
- Forged-steel crankshaft
- Dual-overhead camshafts
- Jet-spray piston cooling
The 2.5L incorporates a two-stage variable-displacement oil pump, for greater efficiency, as well as a balance shaft located in the oil pan, for greater refinement.
All models are matched with a six-speed automatic transmission that complements the truck-tuned engines with features that make hauling and trailering easier and more comfortable, including auto grade braking and a tow/haul mode. A six-speed manual transmission is also available with the 2.5L engine in base extended cab/2WD models.
Like the 2015 Chevy Colorado, the 2015 GMC Canyon delivers segment-leading payload and trailering. The impressive capability is made possible by the fully-boxed perimeter frame, which provides the strength to support its capabilities, and a ride that’s as smooth as it is quiet.
Suspension
A coil-over-type front suspension features aluminum knuckles that are low in mass and high in strength, contributing to a more responsive and immediate feel to driver inputs, as well as efficiency.
Steering
The 2015 Canyon features the segment’s first application of electric power steering, which enhances efficiency since it is not driven by the engine. The same is true of the Canyon’s Chevy-badged platform mate — the Colorado.
Additionally, the Canyon has a tight turning radius of only about 41 feet (12.6 meters), making it easier to maneuver when parking or backing into tight spots, such as garages or campsites.
Brakes
Four-wheel disc brakes with four-piston front calipers are standard and feature segment-exclusive Duralife brake rotors, which were pioneered on the 2014 Sierra and 2014 Silverado. The brakes can offer up to double the service life, which can help lower ownership costs.
Rear Differential
Canyon is available with an automatic locking rear differential, that’s well-known (in some circles) by its G80 option code. Introduced by General Motors more than 40 years ago, the optional diff gives drivers a traction advantage when needed and everyday comfort when it’s not. It is available on SLE and SLT, and standard with the All-Terrain package.
In addition, AutoTrac automatic four-wheel drive is a segment-first feature that employs an electronically-controlled transfer case that allows the driver to shift from 2WD to 4WD. The driver can select four modes, 2WD, Auto, 4WD HI, or 4WD Lo. By selecting ‘Auto’ mode, the transfer case will operate in 2WD and will automatically apply traction to the front wheels (4WD) when the vehicle senses wheel slippage.
Payload
When equipped with the 3.6L V6 LFX engine, the 2015 Canyon has a maximum payload rating of 1,620 pounds (734 kg).
That is 30 pounds (13 kg) more than 2015 Chevy Colorado due to differences in curb weight between both trucks: whereas the Canyon has alloy wheels standard, the Colorado uses heavier steel wheels.
FUEL ECONOMY (MPG): | CITY | HIGHWAY | COMBINED |
---|---|---|---|
2.5L I4 2WD 6-SPEED AUTO: | 20 | 27 | 22 |
2.5L I4 4WD 6-SPEED AUTO: | 19 | 25 | 21 |
3.6L V6 2WD 6-SPEED AUTO: | 18 | 26 | 21 |
3.6L V6 4WD 6-SPEED AUTO: | 17 | 24 | 20 |
The Canyon features a host of active and passive safety technologies to help keep occupants safe on the road. Standard features include:
- Six air bags, including head curtain side air bags that can also reduce the risk of occupant ejection
- Large rearview mirrors
- Rear-vision camera system for greater visibility
- StabiliTrak stability control system with rollover mitigation technology, trailer sway control, hill start assist, and hill descent control (the latter is only available on the Canyon All-Terrain)
Available safety features include:
- Segment-first forward collision alert
- Segment-first lane departure warning
Child Booster Seat Solution
Child booster seats may not fit in the rear jump seat in extended-cab midsize trucks due to the small amount of room, especially when manufacturers recommend to have at least 80 percent of the child restraint base fit on the seat cushion. So, GM engineers designed a solution that allows the rear seat headrest to be removed and inserted into the base of the seat horizontally, thereby becoming an additional point of support for the booster seat.
The 2015 Canyon rides on a unique architecture that’s shared only with the North American-market 2015 Chevy Colorado. Like the full-size GMC Sierra, the Canyon is built on a fully-boxed perimeter frame, which provides the strength to support the truck’s capabilities as well as a ride that’s as smooth as it is quiet.
Through the architecture was first believed to be identical to the international-market Colorado that’s based on GM’s GMI700 platform, it is not the case. Instead, the North American-market Colorado and Canyon utilize a blend of the GMI700 and full-size K2XX vehicle architectures, making for a more robust pickup truck.
The 2015 Canyon is manufactured at GM’s Wentzville assembly plant in Wentzville, Missouri.
The 2015 Canyon is offered in base, SLE, and SLT trim levels, in 2WD and 4WD models.
All-Terrain Package
The 2015 Canyon is offered with an aggressively-styled All-Terrain package on SLE models. The package includes:
- 17-inch painted aluminum wheels wrapped in all-terrain tires
- A body-color grille surround with horizontal chrome bars
- Specific suspension tuning
GMC’s ProGrade protection program for two years or 24,000 miles — whichever comes first — is standard on the 2015 Canyon. ProGrade protection includes scheduled maintenance, and covers four oil changes, tire rotations and 27-point inspections. It complements the three-year/36,000-mile — whichever comes first — bumper-to-bumper limited vehicle warranty and five-year/100,000-mile — whichever comes first — powertrain limited warranty.
Like the 2015 Colorado, the 2015 GMC Canyon will have two major competitors in North America. These include the Toyota Tacoma and Nissan Frontier.
The 2015 GMC Canyon went on sale in September of 2014 as a 2015 model year vehicle.
The 2015 Canyon carries a starting price of $21,880.
Additional trim levels and options will quickly drive the price of the truck Canyon north:
- The mid-range SLE trim level starts at $27,520 for a 2WD extended cab model, which sees the addition of aluminum interior trim panels, a soft-touch instrument panel and door pads, EZ-lift and lower tailgate, an eight-inch color-touch screen with Intellilink infotainment and OnStar’s 4G LTE connectivity with Wi-Fi hotspot technology.
- From there, a 4WD Canyon SLT Crew Cab is available for $37,875; it adds leather-appointed seating, automatic climate control, 18-inch cast-aluminium wheels, remote start, and a rear-differential.
Other optional amenities include a seven-speaker Bose premium audio system and GM’s GearOn accessory system.

As with the Chevrolet Colorado and Silverado, the all-new Canyon will give GMC one of the only three-truck lineups in the industry.
The Canyon is for those customers who need ample capability and refinement, in an efficiently-sized and maneuverable package. In essence, the truck is for customers who want the cargo-hauling and trailering versatility of a truck without the size of a full-size pickup.
“Not everyone needs full-size capability, but they still deserve strength and true-truck attributes that come in larger models. The Canyon will offer all the capability with confidence — and GMC’s signature refinement that complements active lifestyles,” said vice president of GMC Marketing, Tony DiSalle. “It also delivers the technology customers want with more standard features.”
GMC revealed the 2015 Canyon at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit on January 12th, 2014.
Its platform mate, the 2015 Chevrolet Colorado, was unveiled months before at the 2013 Los Angeles International Auto Show.
