Ultium Cells Battery Plants
Ultium Cells facilities are battery plants that mass-produce GM Ultium batteries for use in electric vehicles (EVs) from General Motors (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) as well as from its business partners, including Honda and Acura.
Officially, the plants are known as Ultium Cells LLC – since they are a joint venture between GM and LG Energy Solution.
“Electricity is the future of transportation, powered by battery cells that are designed and manufactured by some of the brightest, most innovative people in the world,” says a statement on the organization’s website. “Ultium Cells is committed to using the most technologically advanced methods in the industry to produce the very best of those battery cells, now and for generations to come.”
Ultium Cells Plants
Currently, two Ultium Cells plants are operational and two more are under construction:
- Ultium Cells USA
- Ultium Cells Lordstown – operational
- Ultium Cells Spring Hill – under construction
- Ultium Cells Lansing – under construction
- Ultium Cells China
- Ultium Cells Shanghai – operational
Ground for the Ultium Cells Lordstown plant – the first Ultium Cells facility – was broken in May 2020, and battery production at the facility began in late 2022.
Construction of the Spring Hill plant began in late 2021 with plans to start production in early 2023. The Lansing plant is the newest of the three, and ground will be broken in the summer of 2022 for a projected start of production in late 2025.
At least one other Ultium Cells plant is currently being considered in Indiana. In addition, it’s highly likely that GM is exploring building more Ultium Cells facilities in other parts of the world.
Products
Ultium Cells plants play a critical role in GM’s commitment to its vision of making exclusively electric vehicles. The plants supply battery packs that will be used by Ultium-powered vehicles, beginning with GMC Hummer EV, including the Hummer EV pickup and Hummer EV SUV, BrightDrop ZEVO 600, Cadillac Lyriq, Chevy Blazer EV and Silverado EV, as well as the Cruise Origin autonomous vehicle and the Cadillac Celestiq ultra-luxury sedan. Various other future GM EVs will also use GM Ultium batteries and Ultium Drive motors.
Ultium Cells will also supply batteries for the upcoming Equinox EV as well as for a handful of Honda-Acura products, as part of the partnership between GM and Honda.
