The GM Canadian Technical Center at Oshawa, otherwise known as the GM Oshawa Technical Center, is a vehicle development facility in Ontario, Canada. It serves as an integral part of GM’s Global Engineering operations with full-scale vehicle design and development capability to develop General Motors vehicles, subsystems and technologies.
The Oshawa Technical Center is one of two GM Technical Centers in Canada, with the other being the GM Markham Technical Center.
Current Focus
The center’s current focus is on chassis and body subsystems, while continuing to enhance its expertise in alternative fuels, specialty vehicles, cold weather development, and complex project delivery. The facility also provided engineering support for current production vehicles, including Manufacturing, Product, and Quality Engineering disciplines.
GM Canada Technical Expansion
In early 2017, GM announced an expansion to its Canadian engineering base to reach a total of approximately 1,000 positions over the next few years. The development will result in bringing the Oshawa Tech Center beyond its maximum capacity. As a result, the automaker opened a new Canadian Technical Center in Markham, Ontario.
GM’s Markham Technical Center will focus on the development of autonomous vehicle software and controls, active safety, vehicle dynamics technology, as well as infotainment and connected vehicle technologies — areas vital for the development of new connected, autonomous and shared vehicles and mobility systems.
2007 Transformation
In 2007, the Canadian Engineering Centre underwent a transformation from being from primarily a vehicle engineering organization into a centre that focuses its activities on advanced technology innovation and applied research and development activities. Advanced “Green” automotive technology development was targeted for CREC as a critical corporate priority.
As part of General Motors Global Engineering Organization, the Canadian Engineering Center at Oshawa has a prolific Record of Inventions (ROI) with 331 ROIs to date and 78 patents filed in the last 36 months (through Q1 2017).
