The Northstar engine was a family of high-performance powerplants produced by General Motors from 1993 to 2011. Originally intended to exclusively power Cadillac models, the Northstar was considered GM’s most technically complex engine at the time, and featured a double overhead cam (DOHC), four valve per cylinder, and aluminum block / aluminum head design.
Overview
There were initially two variants on offer, including the high-revving L37 and torque-focused LD8 engines. Later on, the Northstar engine family grew to include a wide range of versions, consisting of the 4.0L L47, V6 LX5, longitudinally-mounted LH2, and supercharged LC3.
