Future Chevrolet City Express

Currently, it is unclear whether there will be a follow-up model to the Chevrolet City Express. However, if a next, second-generation City Express does come to market, then we expect it to launch in the vicinity of the 2022-2023 model years. Until then, we expect the current, first-generation City Express developed and built by Nissan to receive minor changes, updates, and improvements.

Following is speculative and unconfirmed information about the next Chevrolet City Express. This page is a continuous work-in-progress and will be updated on a regular basis as we await official details from General Motors and Chevrolet.

If you notice any inaccuracies about the information provided, or have edits to suggest, please let us know here.

Overview

  • What: though unknown whether GM will actually make such a vehicle, an all-new Chevrolet City Express compact van could represent the second generation of the Chevrolet compact van as a vehicle designed and produced by GM with GM parts and technology; by contrast, the current first-generation City Express is designed and produced by Nissan with minimal GM input or technologies
  • When: it is possible that the next City Express will launch in the 2022 calendar year as a 2022 or 2023 model year vehicle
  • Why: an all-new Chevy City Express will enable Chevrolet to build its presence in the compact van space
  • Where: sold in all current markets where Chevrolet has a business presence, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, and the Middle East; sales in China are possible though unlikely due to GM’s Wuling light commercial vehicle (LCV) joint venture

Expectations

Following are our expectations about the future Chevrolet City Express:

  • Based on the new GM VSS-F platform (vehicle set), delivering all-new underpinnings and engineering
  • All-new exterior, available in panel van and potentially passenger van and taxi van configurations
  • All-new interior
  • Inclusion of next-generation infotainment system
  • Introduction of more GM Active Safety features and technologies
  • Introduction of all-new powertrain range

Body Styles

We expect the upcoming future Chevy City Express to continue being available as a compact panel van. Passenger van and taxi van models are possible.

Price

We expect the next Chevy City Express to carry similar pricing as the current, first-gen model in the $22,000 range.

Platform

We expect the next-gen Chevy City Express to ride on the GM VSS-F vehicle set shared with future GM front-drive cars and crossovers. The GM VSS, or Vehicle Set Strategy, represents a new way for GM to develop and build vehicles.

Powertrain

We expect the next Chevy City Express to feature the following powertrain lineup:

  • Gasoline engines:
    • Naturally-aspirated I-4 / inline four-cylinder engine
    • Turbocharged I-4 / inline four-cylinder engine
  • Diesel engines:
    • Turbocharged I-4 / inline four-cylinder engine
  • Transmissions:

Production

It is currently unclear whether GM will develop and produce a follow-up to the first-gene City Express. If it does, then the vehicle could theoetically be produced at any GM factory globally.

Competitors

The future Chevrolet City Express will have the following competitors:

  • Ford Transit
  • Nissan NV200
  • Volkswagen Caddy
  • Dodge ProMaster City

Before The All-New Model

Before the all-new future Chevy City Express reaches the market, we expect the current first-generation Chevy City Express to receive minor changes, updates, and improvements as per Nissan’s timeline of the NV200.
