The Basics
The Corvette SUV has not been announced nor confirmed by GM or Chevy. However, GM Authority does expect such a model to arrive in the future.
Before going further, it’s worth clearing up that the term “Corvette SUV” is actually a misnomer. That’s because “SUV” is an acronym for Sport Utility Vehicle, a term that’s technically associated with body on frame vehicles used by most pickup trucks. The Corvette SUV, however, will not be body-on-frame. Instead, it will be a unibody model that’s more aptly described by the term “crossover, otherwise known as a crossover utility vehicle (CUV). But given that “SUV” is a term that has become synonymous, however incorrectly, to refer to crossovers, we’ll refer to the vehicle in question as the Corvette SUV.
Additionally, there has been some confusion about whether the Corvette SUV will be powered by an internal combustion engine (ICE) or batteries (thereby being a battery electric vehicle, or BEV). We firmly believe that a BEV powertrain will be found in the Corvette SUV, despite one rumor to the contrary.
Direction
Though specifics are non-existent at this point, it’s highly likely that the Corvette SUV will take on the direction of a road-going model that focuses on on-road performance and driving dynamics, as opposed to off-road performance. GM is reserving off-road prowess to its GMC Hummer EV models – the Hummer EV SUV and Hummer EV Pickup.
Platform
We expect the upcoming Corvette SUV to ride on the GM BEV Prime platform. This is a variant of the GM BEV3 unibody electric vehicle architecture, but one that will be capable of accommodating several performance enhancements such as a lower floor height to accommodate the battery.
Powertrain
We expect the Chevrolet Corvette SUV to feature Ultium Drive motors, with either a two-motor configuration (with a motor at each axle) or a three-motor configuration (with a motor at the front and two motors at the rear). Both configurations will give the vehicle all-wheel-drive capabilities. A large Ultium Battery will be present and accounted for between the wheels. The multi-motor drivetrain and large battery will certainly make for a hefty curb weight.
Size
From a size standpoint, we expect the Corvette SUV to measure in somewhere in the vicinity of 200 inches in length. This size is necessary to properly package the battery pack and associated EV hardware, while also putting the vehicle in line with key rivals such as the Lambo Urus, which measures in at 201 inches long.
Two rows or seating for either four or five passengers will be present and accounted for.
Timing
We expect the Corvette SUV to come to market around the 2026 calendar year, likely as a 2027 model.
Competitors
Key competitors will include performance SUVs with internal combustion engines, including the Porsche Cayenne and Lamborghini Urus. Porsche is working on migrating the Cayenne to a battery electric powertrain, so the incoming Cayenne EV would be a direct rival to the battery electric Corvette SUV.
Renderings
GM Authority rendered the Corvette SUV back in January 2020 followed by a more rugged Z71 model in September 2020.
In 2023, GM Authority published an April Fools’ story showing a rendered Corvette ZR2 Shooting Brake.
Corvette Sub-Brand
The topic of Chevrolet creating a Corvette sub-brand has been floating for roughly a decade, with the following reports on the topic:
- November 2022: Corvette brand to expand to electric sedan, crossover in 2025
- August 2022: Electric Corvette crossover under consideration
- January 2021: electric Corvette crossover in the works
- July 2019: GM finally considering Corvette brand (report)
Related Vehicles
The Corvette SUV is expected to be mechanically related to another electric Corvette – the Corvette Sedan.
