Two powerplants were offered upon launch, including the naturally-aspirated 3.6L V6 LY7 engine, rated at 255 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, and the naturally-aspirated Northstar 4.6L V8 LH2 engine, rated at 320 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque.

Under the hood, the 3.6L LY7 engine was replaced by the 3.6L V6 LLT engine, which produced 302 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque.
Optional safety features consisted of a Mobileye-developed Lane Departure Warning System, Blind Spot Monitoring, and an improved StabiliTrak stability control system.
A high-performance STS-V model was available from the 2006 to 2009 model years. It was powered by the supercharged Northstar 4.4L V8 LC3 gasoline engine, rated at 469 horsepower and 439 pound-feet of torque, and was capable of delivering a 0-60 mph sprint in 4.6 seconds.
A long-wheelbase variant, dubbed Cadillac SLS, was offered in China.
