The Buick Regal GS receives a few very minor changes and updates for the 2020 model year. Notably, the 2020 Buick Regal represents the third and final model year of the sixth-generation Regal, as the nameplate will be discontinued after 2020 in North America. While the Regal will no longer be offered in the U.S. and Canada, the Sportback model will be sold in China where demand for sedans remains significant.

Body Styles
The 2020 Buick Regal GS continues to offered as a midsize four-door sedan model with a liftback/hatch, and is a high-performance variant of the Regal Sportback. In North America, the model is also available as a midsize four-door ruggedized wagon: the 2020 Buick Regal TourX.
In China, the Regal is offered exclusively as a four-door sedan that looks just like the Regal Sportback, but has a “regular” sedan trunk.
Powertrain
The 2020 Buick Regal GS is offered with the following engines and transmissions:
Model | Engine | Wheel Drive | Transmission | Power (hp / kW @ RPM) | Torque (lb-ft / Nm @ RPM) | Axle Ratio |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Regal Sportback GS | 3.6L V6 Naturally Aspirated LGX DOHC | All wheel drive | 9-speed auto M3T | 310 / 231 @ 6800 | 282 / 381 @ 5200 | 2.89 |

Like all sixth-generation units of the Buick Regal, the 2020 Regal GS rides on GM’s E2 platform shared with the following vehicles:
- Chevrolet Malibu (second generation)
- Opel Insignia (second generation)
- Holden Commodore NG
- Cadillac XT4Â (first generation)
- Buick LaCrosse (third generation), which rides on the long wheelbase variant of E2 platform
Production
The 2020 Buick Regal GS will continue to be assembled at the GM-Opel Russelsheim factory by GM Europe for the North American market for the remainder of 2020. A plant operated by GM China and its partner, SAIC, will continue to assemble the Regal Sedan vehicle for the Chinese domestic market.
Availability
The 2020 Buick Regal GS follows the regular GM model year rollover sequence and launches in the third quarter of the 2019 calendar year in North America.
Beyond 2020
As stated, the current, sixth-generation Buick Regal will remain in production for the 2020 model year. Afterward, the nameplate will be discontinued in the United States.
Although the Regal and Regal GS will no longer be offered in the U.S. and Canada, it will be sold in China where demand for sedans remains significant. As such, we expect the current model to remain in production in the Chinese market for the 2021, 2022, and 2023 model years.
We previously anticipated the arrival of a future Buick Regal after the 2023-2024 model years, however, there will not be a replacement for the current Regal after its discontinuation.
