The 2022 Buick Electra-X concept is an all-electric concept that previewed the Buick Electra E4.
It is not to be confused with the Buick Electra concept that was unveiled in 2020.
Exterior Design
Based on Buick’s new “Pure Design” philosophy, the Buick Electra-X concept is finished in Satin White Metallic and boasts smooth and sleek bodywork, communicating a minimalist exterior design accented with bold body lines. The front doors feature a unique crease that extends from the front quarter panel to the rocker panels. Its front end is streamlined with shark-nose styling and a prominent splitter situated beneath the trapezoidal grille. It has a coupe-like expression and low profile, lending it a sporty outlook, and features a wraparound windshield and panoramic glass roof to convey a feel of openness both inside and out.
The concept takes the Tri-Shield’s “flying wing” design language to a new level, leading the eye to the automaker’s insignia mounted on the front fascia above the grille. High mounted horizontal “checkmark” lamps show the way, while the grille is accented with aviation-inspired lamps at the edge of the grille, which will be found on many Buick models in the future. It rolls on a set of 21-inch wheels designed with aerodynamics in mind.
The Buick Electra-X was designed with the younger generation in mind, and many of its stylish design elements and “purposeful innovation” will make it to future production EVs, although they may not be identical to this concept crossover.
Interior Design
The Buick Electra-X concept crossover boasts an innovative interior. It can seat four passengers, with an interior layout optimized for extension of the cabin through its long wheelbase in order to accommodate larger battery packs. The instrument panel is driver-focused, and incorporates hidden air vents to control the cockpit’s climate.
A medium gray to sky cool gray gradient lifts the interior color scheme, creating “zero-gravity floating styling.” Copper accents provide focal points throughout the cabin, along with “GS” graphic patterns etched in various places, paying homage to the automaker’s Grand Sport brand. Additionally, the seats are composed of 3D knit fabric made from recycled plastic bottles.
Mechanical
The Buick Electra-X concept leverages Ultium Battery technology and Ultium Drive motors. GM didn’t share any technical details beyond that, such as drive wheels or the concept’s architecture. That said, this model likely rides on the GM BEV3 platform.
Technology
The Electra-X concept crossover features the all-new Virtual Cockpit System (VCS), which is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 flagship chip for the ultimate connected experience within the vehicle. It also facilitates over-the-air (OTA) capabilities, allowing it to receive updates to its various systems remotely. iKey functionality can also be used, allowing the driver to remotely unlock, control, park and share the vehicle via smartphone application.
The Electra-X can be customized to respond to various voice controls. The voice command system supports almost 50 scenarios and functions, allowing occupants to voice-activate various systems such as navigation, audio, climate control, seat adjustments, interior ambience lighting and sunroof.
The crossover is also outfitted with Super Cruise, GM’s semi-autonomous driver assist technology, for hands-free driving on applicable roadways.
Development
The concept was developed by PATAC (Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center) in Shanghai.
Unveiling
The 2022 Buick Electra-X concept was revealed in Shanghai during the 2022 Buick Brand Day in June. At the same event, Buick confirmed its plans to transition to an all-electric brand by the end of 2030.
